DEAN Tel. 765-3140 Superintendent 734-5211 SPECIFICATIONS FOR DUMP 'BODY ArTD HOIST Body shall be a Thiele ,'4odel 12 or equal; 6 cu.yd. Fater Level. Body to be 9' long by 7' 4" wide inside with 30" sides and tailgate. Body to have front and rear corner posts with at least three vertical side braces with a 7 1/4" wide face. Body shall be constructed of 10 ga. steel. Floor of Body to be 8 ga. All welding to be continuous. Dirt shedder running boards. Boxed top rail, side, sloped running boards and bottom rub rail to be formed of one full length sheet. Floor of body to be one piece. Seam welded or spliced floor not acceptable. Tailgate shall have a boxed perimeter with one hori- zontal intermediate boxed brace. Horizontal and lower boxed brace to be sloped. Tailgate bracing to be 3 1/2" deep with a double channel bracing on bottom of gate. Upper tailgate hardware to be 3/4" flame cut, , offset type. Upper pin to be 1 1/8" case hardened with a minimum of 125, 000 PSI tensile strength. Lower hardware to be offset type with lubrication fitting. A 1/2 cab protector shall be provided. Body front panel and cab protector to be formed of ono , continuous sheet and extending 24" forward of front of body. Body shall be equipped with required lighting, mud flaps, reflectors, underbody support prop and back.-up alarm. Body sub-frame shall be stacked type with 6" I beam longitudinals and 4" I beam crossmembers on 12" centers. Hoist shall be a single cvlinler, double arm type with a cylinder bore of not less than 8" and a minimum stroke of 24" 'tvdraulic Pump capacity 15 GPM @ 1000 RP's and 1000 PSI. Terry : This letter is being written to make you aware of the fact that only one manufacturer can bid on the dump bodies requested in the bid opening for the Town of Southold on July 13 , 1978. These specifications are written so tightly around this one manufacturer that none of the other major manufacturers, such as Heil, Peabody Galion, Perfection and others , can meet the specifications. The specifications require a feature that only one manufacturer uses , and it has no special function, nor does it increase the longevity of the equipment , add to its range of application or ease of operation or maintenance. Additionally, this manufacturer only builds its own body, it does not build its own hoist but buys from another manufacturer, possibly one of those mentioned above. This leads me to wonder wriere the responsibility lies should there be a failure of the equipment. It may interest you to know that the 'Town of Brookhaven recently published bid specifications where the situation was similar to yours. We submitted a bid using our equipment which they pur- chased in spite of the differences of manufacture in design. This restrictive specification could not be in the interest of the Town of Southold as competitive bidding is impossible, therefore, you may not be able to get full value for your money. This letter is not intended to start waves, but I feel that you should be aware of this situation, and if you have not, maybe you would like to look into tie writing of less restrictive specifications that would still obtain the quality you need at a more competitive price.
