PUBLIC HEARING
JUNE 19, 2001
5:02 P.M.
ON THE PROPOSED "LOCAL LAW IN RELATION TO ADDING A STOP SIGN AT
GREENWOOD ROAD, FISHERS ISLAND, NEW YORK".
Present:
Supervisor Jean W. Cochran
Justice Louisa P. Evans
Councilman William D. Moore
Councilman John M. Romanelli
Councilman Brian G. Murphy
Councilman Craig A. Richter
Town Clerk Elizabeth A. Neville
Town Attorney Gregory F. Yakaboski
SUPERVISOR COCHRAN: The next public hearing is a Local Law in Relation to Adding
Stop Signs.
COUNCILMAN RICHTER: "NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING.WHEREAS there has
been presented to the Town Board of the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, New York
on the 5th day of June, 2001, a Local Law entitled "A Local Law in Relation to adding a
Stop sign on Greenwood Road heading in a southerly direction at the intersection of Whistler
Avenue on Fishers Island", now, therefore, be it RESOLVED that the Town Board of the
.Town of Southold will hold 'a public heating on the aforesaid Local Law at the Southold
Town Hall, 53095 Main Road, Southold, New York on the 19th day of June, 2001 at 5:02
p.m., at which time all interested persons will be given an opportunity to be heard. This
proposed "Local Law in Relation to adding a stop sign at Greenwood Road, Fishers Island,
New York", which reads as follows:
I. Chapter 92, Section 92-30 (Vehicles & Traffic) of the Code of the Town of
Southold is hereby amended as follows:
Stop Sign on Direction At Inter- Hamlet
Of Travel section with
Greenwood Road South Whistler Avenue Fishers Island
II. Severability. If any section or subsection, paragraph, clause, phrase or provision
of this law shall be judged invalid or held unconstitutional by any court of
competent jurisdiction, any judgment made thereby shall not affect the validity of
this law as a whole or any part thereof other than the part or provision so adjudged
to be invalid or unconstitutional.
1II. This Local Law shall take effect immediately upon filing with the Secretary of
State.
Dated: June 5, 2001. By Order of the Southold Town Board. Elizabeth A. Neville, Southold
Town Clerk." I have an affidavit it was posted on the bulletin board, and a legal notice in the
local paper. There is one piece of correspondence. I am writing to address the hearing
regarding the three stop signs near the ferry areas. Traffic near the Ferry District continues to
be a direct concern to the Fishers Island School District as we are neighbors. Having observed
the recent change of direction, I request that with the approval of the stop sign on Greenwood
Road you include a stop line just short of the crosswalk that is already there. Most stop signs
have a stop line. This one does not. This would improve safety on this crosswalk where most
of the school children cross, because without the stop line, most people stop in the cross walk,
and then proceed forward. With a stop line, it would improve the point that drivers must stop
at the stop s~gn, and then proceed. Respectfully submitted, Kathleen Koehnen. That's it.
SUPERVISOR COCHRAN: You have heard the reading of the public notice in relation to
adding a stop sign at Greenwood Road, Fishers Island. Any comments either pro or con?
Anyone like to comment on the stop sign? (No response.) If not, I will close the heating.
