Southold Town Hall Conference Room A meeting of the Deer Management Committee was held Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at the Town Hall Conference Room, Main Rd., in Southold. Present were: Chairperson Jeff Standish, Members: Councilman Jim Dinizio, John Betsch, David Dominy, Adam West, John Haas, Robert Lehnert, John Scaramucci, John Rumpler, Nancy Foote. Call to order : Jeff Standish called the meeting to order at 6:30 P.M. New Properties : Jeff reported the co-owned Suffolk County/Town properties where there are walking trails will open November 1 as per his conversation with Nick Gibbons from the SC Parks Dept. He laid out the changes to the program including tree stands and preserves. Four hunters will be permitted on the Blocker property. Town hunters do not need a SC green card to hunt the co-owned properties but Suffolk County hunters will need the SC issued tags. All this information can be found in the Deer Management Program literature that can be viewed on the Town website. After reviewing Angel Shores, a perspective new property, it was decided that the piece was too tight and the zone would be too close to the road. This property will be left out of the program this year. The new Orient property will be trimmed up before Oct 1. Website: Changes have been made to the home page of the Town website. It is easier to navigate to the Deer Management page from the home page. John Severini would like to see more information concerning the deer damaging the ecosystem on the Town website. 2014 Program - Jeff brought the idea of admitting Suffolk County Veterans to the Town programs before the Town Board but a decision has not been made regarding this proposal. Councilman Jim Dinizio has been approached by residents with concerns of the new 150’ setback rule. Jeff explained that he and Nancy Foote went door to door in the areas that would be most affected by this new law. They handed out a letter outlining the program, new setback and information regarding deer hunting in their area. The residents were happy to see Town employees and feedback was positive. Placing the letter on the website will be discussed by the Town Board. John Betsch thought for a non-hunter the 150’ rule can be frightening. He believes educating the public is key. Explaining the distance and keeping the residents informed. Jeff explained to the committee that Philip Beltz places informational pieces in his monthly Suffolk Times column (once a month) and will ask him include information about the 150’ rule. Jeff will also call Josh Stille at the DEC for their press release. Discussion followed. 1 Jeff discussed the new law passed in regards to hunting on Saturday & Sunday during shot gun season. The law also allows bow and arrow this time. It stipulates in the rules that you need 10 acres but this may change, the DEC can still control the law. Town properties will be a lottery if the 10 acre rule stands. Packet pick up is scheduled for September 29. Dave Dominy and Adam West have offered to speak to remind hunters to keep a decorous profile while out in the field and approaching homeowners when the need arises to enter private property. The meeting was adjourned at 7:35 PM. Respectfully submitted, Nancy Foote Deer Management Program Secretary 2
