MINUTES
BOARD OF SOUTHOLD TOWN TRUSTEES
Meeting of January 7, 1974
A regular meeting of the Board of Southold Town Trustees was held
at 7:30 P.M., Monday, January 7, 1974 at the Town Board meeting
room, 16 South Street, Greenport, New York, with the following
present:
Alvah B. Goldsmith, Chairman
Douglas M. Robertson
Philip G~ Horton
Frederick E. Gordon
Judith To Boken, Secretary
Also present: Loretta Hess, representing the Long Island Traveler-
Mattituck Watchman, Evelyn Gordon, represent the North Fork Taxpayers
Association, Carol Bolger and Mrs. O'Brien, representing the North
Fork Environmental Council.
Rudolph Bruer, Esq., appeared before the Board to present a~ proposal
by Charles King and Anthony DeMaula to lease 2½ acres of under-water
land in Mattituck Creek from the Town for the purpose of 'developing
and farming oysters. Mr. King owns property on Mattituck Creek and
the proposed leased land is adjacent to his property, that of his son,
and a Miss Fox, and Mattituck Marina is across the creek. Ail parties
concerned halve verball~ consented to such a project. In the past
five years Mr. King and Mr. DeMauLa have been experimenting in grow-
ing oysters and the spawn have disbursed to other areas of Mattituck
Creek.
Mr._DeMaula described the p&~ing process and cultivation of
oysters,,'-'e~plaining that the area in question is 8 to 10 feet in
depth, and not generally used by clammers as it has a very hard
bottom. Mr. DeMaul displayed sample-oysters to the Board, e~plaining
their origin in the'Creek.
The Board advised that they would investigate the proposal
carefully, seeking advice from the Town Attorney and would be. in
touch with them if there are any further questions.
(Later in the meeting Mr. Paul Chanley, Marine Biologist, spoke
to the Board on behalf of the proposal by Mr. King and Mr. DeMaula)

Mr. Chanley elaborated on the background and economics of food
shortages arising steadily in this country, pointing out that
farming the sea or Ma~a-culture .is an absolute.necessity, He

Florida, and France and Spain and other countries. He pointed out
that research is foremoSt, and this proposed p~oject will Xl) be
possible for Mattituck Cre~k to produce much more food than it
is producing now; (2) Mara-culture will help preserve water quality
in the area; (3) will provide an opportunity to get Mara-culture
research out of the laboratory into production.
Mr. Chanley requested that the Board act favorably on the
requeSt by Mr. K~ng and Mr. DeMaula. He also suggested°the Trustees
consider zoning all water areas under their jurisdiction into
recreation, sport, fishing, industrial, etc., as careful planning
will produce useful use of water resources.
Wetland applicatiQn No. 12 was received from Leonard Fischer, 24
Circle Drive, Jamespott, New York, requesting permission to deposit
approximately 1,~00 cubic yards of fill on property at the southwest
corner of Lighthouse Road and Soundview Avenue (419 feet on Light-
house Road and 476.50 feet on Soundview Avenue), Southold, New York.
The Board will investigate the site before making their recommendation
to the Town Board.
On motion of Mr. Robertson, seconded by Mr. Horton, it was
RESOLVED that William E. Lewis, 524 Sterling Place, Greenport, New
York be granted permission to place an onshore-offshore moDring
in.Narrow River, off Narrow River Road, Orient,-New York, all in
accordance with the detailed specifications as presented in the
originating application. Fee $5.00 paid.
Vote of the Board: Ayes: Mr. Goldsmith, Mr. Robertson, Mr. Horton,
Mr. Gordon.
On motion of Mr. Horton, seconded by Mr. Gordon, it was
RESOLVED that the minutes of the Board of Southold Town T~ustees
for meeting held on December 3, 1973 be approved as submitted.
Vote of the Board: Ayes: Mr. Goldsmith, Mr. Robertson, Mr. Horton,
Mr. Gordon.

RESOLVED that the next meeting of the Board of Southold Town
Trustees will be held 7:30 P.M., Monday, February 11, 1974 at
the office of the Supervisor, 16 South Street, Greenport, New York.
Vote of the Board: Ayes: Mr. Goldsmith, Mr. Robertson, Mr. Horton,
Mr. Gordon.

Mr. Goldsmith reported to the Board that he had attending a meeting
sponsored by the New York Sea Grant Advisory Service and Rhode Island
Marine Trade Association at Mystic, Connecticut on December 12 and
13, 1973. Mr. Goldsmith~stated ~that~.'hei~had.made numerous notes and
collected considerable informative literature which he would leave
with the Secretary at the Southold office for those interested in
examining it.
