r PROPOSAL FOR EVIDENCE AND STORAGE BUILDING
For many years the Police Department has been in need of a secure building for
the preservation of evidence and storage of valuable articles. Presently we store
vehicles, including boats, in an open impound area which offers no protection from
the elements. These items have to be safeguarded not only from the weather, but any
changes from their original state. Just last year a valuable boat, engine and trail-
er had to be taken to the Suffolk County Police Department storage garage for preser-
vation. Other items which have been found, stolen, recovered and turned over to the
Police Department for "safe keeping" pursuant to Article 7-B of the Personal Property
Law, are retained for a period of time ranging from 3 months to 3 years, depending on
the value of the property.
To the rear of Police Headquarters there is room to erect a 30'x5O' steel build—
ing which would serve the town for many years. In addition, it would give the Bay
Constable a place to keep his boats which are used for emergency responses. The Bay
Constable also needs a safe location for the storage of equipment. An outboard motor
was stolen this spring, from an open shed which he presently uses.
The Cutchogue Fire Department has such a building (photos attached) at a cost of
about $20,000.00.
I have contacted a Morton Buildings representative, who indicated the cost is
about $10.00 a square foot. The 6" floor would require 28 yards of concrete (3,000
grit at $53.00 per yard) - $1,484.00 plus masonary costs. The only other costs would
be the lights. Other suggested specifications for the building are:
12' x 12' door in front - this will allow a wrecker to back into the building
4 skylights in the roof - no windows in building
solid entry door in front
10' x 10' overhead door at rear side of the building for the Bay Constable's
boat
no heat in building
6" concrete floor
minimum of lighting - 4 overhead lights
Total cost of the building should not exceed $20,000.00
