A special joint meeting of the Southold Town Board and Southold
Town Trustees was held at the office of Supervisor Norman E. Klipp
at Greenport~ on Thursday, January 26, 1956. The meeting was called
to order at ~ o'clock P.M. with the following present: Supervisor
Klipp; Justices Clark and Demarest and Councilman Albertson, Town
Attorney Terry Town Trustees Dean, Dawson, McNultM, Goldsmith and
Weiler.
The Supervisor called the meeting for the purpose of considering
the Town Trustees request that escallops not having a clearl~ode-
fined annual growth line be allowed to be taken from Gidd's Bay
and Mill Creek.
WHEREAS, There is conclusive evidence that scallops not having a
clearly defined annual growth line are dying and will continue
to die in Mill Creek at Arshamomaque, New York, and in Gidd's Bay
at Orient? New York, and
WHEREAS, It is the unanimous opinion of the Town Board of Trustees
of the Town of Southold that such scallops should be salvaged,
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED: That the Town Board of Trustees of the Town of Southold
request the Supervisor ~nd the Town Board to take such steps as
they deem necessary to obtain an order from the New York S~ate
Conwerwation Department allowing scallops not h~ving a clearly de-
fined annual ~rowth line to be taken and possessed from the above
mentioned areas in limited amounts up to and including March 31, 1956.
As a result of the resolution of the Board

~EREAS, The Town Board of Trustees of the Town of Southold having
Jurisdiction of the lands underwater in the Town of Southold have
brought to the attention of the Southold Town Board that scallops
not h~ving a clearly defined annual growth line are dying ~nd will
continue to die in Mill Creek at Arshamomaque, New York, and G~dd's
Bay, Orient, New York, and have requested the Supervisor and the Town
Board to take whatever steps they deem necessary to salvage such
scallops, and
WHEREAS, It is the feeling of the Southold Town Board that many
families could derive a livelihood from such action, and failure
to open the two above mentioned areas would seriously affect the
economy of the Town of Souhold, Now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED: That the Supervisor be, and he hereby is, directed to
request the Commissioner of Conservation to issue with the least
poSSible delay an order allowing scallops not having a clearly de-
fined annual growth line to be taken and possedded from
(1) That area commonly known as Mill Cre~k at Arshamomaque, New York,
from New York State Route 25 Bridge north, and
(2) That area commonly known as Gidd's Bay, Orient, New York.
northerly of a straight line drawn between Peter's Neck Poin~ and
Brown Point,
in an amount not exceediDK 5 bushels Der Rers~n peg day foy commer-
cial ~i~poses, and for 5~ays per week on±y, r~em Monday ~o Friday,
both ?Fys inclusive, up to ~nd including March 31, 1956.
