Dear Mr. Russell,
I write in regards to the recent issues surrounding the use of plastic bags in Southold Town. I like
plastic bags and their ease of use et. el., carrying so many items, the fact that they stretch to fit just
about everything you need to carry, and the handles slip over your wrist for ease of use.
It is a shame that we can't use something that serves our needs so well because people are
inconsiderate and do not dispose of the bags in a proper manner. After I carry my groceries home in
those plastic bags, I store them for later use for a multitude of uses around my household. As an older
single household occupant, the smaller bags allow me to place articles into the trash, and carry them to
the garbage can for disposal. Additionally, the bags allow me to dispose of messier materials without
creating additional mess that would need to be cleaned up.These bags are reusable and I use them over
and over.
I also rely on these small bags to carry items of importance. They are light and the handles slip
around my wrist easily enabling me to carry items to and from my car, around the yard, and the house.
It is difficult for the elderly people to carry so many items without fear of tripping and falling.
These bags are a boon to the elderly of this community. Please consider these ideas when
deliberating on the ban of these bags in Southold Township.
Respectfully yours,
Mrs.Jane Burger

To the Southold Town Board:
I appreciate your consideration of the proposed Single Use Plastic Bag Ban.
I strongly support this ban.
Because I spend many hours on the beaches of Southold Town, I am dismayed
by the abundance of discarded plastic bags littering the beaches, floating in
the waters and clogging storm drains. Unfortunately, there has been a
significant increase in this unsightly and environmentally threatening debris over
the past few years.
A quick review of the many municipalities that have banned the sale of single
use plastic bags in the United States, as well as throughout the world, indicates
that a large majority of these communities are located on, near, or surrounded
by the sea. Since our beautiful North Fork is surrounded by water, the health of
these waters and surrounding beaches must be a primary consideration in your
deliberations.
Thank you,
