COUNCILMAN STOUTENBURGH: "Public Notice is hereby given that there has been presented to the Town Board of the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, New York, on the 16th day of June, 1987, a Local Law entitled, "A Local Law in relation to the Taking of Shellfish." Notice is Further given that the Town Board of the Town of Southold will hold a public hearing on the aforesaid Local Law at the Southold Town Hall, Main Road, Southold, New York, on the 30th day of June, 1987, at 8:06 o'clock P.M., at which time all interested persons will be heard. Section 77-203C of Chapter 77 (Shellfish) of the Town Code is hereby amended by adding the following sentence thereto: "There shall be no fee for a permanent resident who has attained the age of sixty-two (62) years." I have notice here from our Town Clerk that it has been posted on the Town Clerk's Bulletin Board. It has also been published in The Long Island Traveler- Watchman and The Suffolk Times. I have no other further communications. Page 2 - LL- Shellfish DEPUTY SUPERVISOR KUJAWSKI: Are there any comments on this Local Law? Comments from this side of the room? Center? Yes. EVERT BERGEN: My name is Evert Bergen. I live at Beebe Drive in Cutchogue. Just a few words in support of all the proposals with reference to the Shellfish Law. Particularly the one regarding Crab Pots. Not only will they deplete our crab population, they also catch other marine life, such as the turtles that live in our creeks, and the poor guys, they just get in the traps and they die--they drown themselves--they can't get out. Other areas of the country have been faced with crab pot problems and they have limited their crab pots also, and I think it's a very wise derision for this Town to do it, because it becomes a big problem. Of course, the ne fee for the over 62's is very wise. I think the decision also to limit the taking of female crabs is a wise decision and well worthwhile. As we all know our blue claw crabs are diminishing gradually all the time. That's all. I fully support the revisions. Thank you. DEPUTY SUPERVISOR KUJAWSKI: Thank you. Are there any other comments? (No response.) Okay, we'll close that hearing. dith ~T.
