Judith T. Terri y%% Southold Town Clerk September 12, 1990 L September 10, 1990 i OUV! Gpti1i MEMORANDUM TO: Ray Jacobs r ' FROM: Jim Bunchuck SUBJECT: Sand Remaining For Use as Landfill Cover This memo is to update you, as you have requested, on the status of our sand situation at the landfill . As you know, DEC regulations require that landfill operations take place no closer than 100 feet to adjacent properties . Through most of this summer, we have been mining sand for use as daily cover from the northern boundary of the existing sand pit, moving east along that boundary as we approached 100 feet from the adjacent property to the north. We have now begun to take sand from the northeast corner of the sand pit. Once this corner is squared off, we will have reached the 100-foot legal limit in all areas of the sand pit . I estimate this point will be reached in four to six weeks, if we continue to limit our daily sand cover to 40 - 60 yards per day. Keep in mind that, while this is the minimum amount of sand we need for daily cover under normal circumstances, additional cover would be required in high wind conditions, to cover unusually large amounts of garbage, or if we are unable to run the compactor on the garbage . In addition, our current level of cover does not necessarily cover to a depth of six inches, as required by DEC. To perform our operations adequately, we need to have at least 100 yards of cover material available each day. This would allow us to cover to sufficient depth and to properly build new garbage cells, while providing a small cushion for emergency situations (e .g. , fire or high winds ) . At this rate, we would need almost 10, 000 yards of cover material to carry us through the end of this year . I suggest the Town look into alternatives for acquiring this material as soon as possible . lJ"
