JEFFERY T. STANDISH Town Hall
DIRECTOR PO Box 1179
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS Southold, NY 11971
Parks, Beaches and Recreation Committee
MINUTES June 24, 2014 Meeting
6:30 P.M. in the Town Hall Conference Room
Present were: Chairperson: Arthur Leudesdorf, Members: Ken Reeves, Nancy Foote
Guests: Philip Beltz, Maggie Merrill
Call to order:
Chairperson, Art Leudesdorf called the meeting to order at 6:35 P.M. Below are
discussion items:
Field Use Update:
Art Leudesdorf reviewed the letter sent out by Supervisor Russell regarding
misuse of fields when ball fields are fenced off for maintenance & repair work. Art met with the Town
Board to discuss support needed for Town employees regarding the issue. The letter was sent to all
coaches who use the field eliminating the need for Ken Reeves or Jeff Standish to confront coaches
regarding possible infractions. The feedback received from the coaches was mostly positive and
appreciative of all the work done by the Town keeping the fields in “tip top” shape. Currently the
North Fork Ospreys and the Mattituck Ospreys are using the fields. Ken reported that all dues are
paid in full and residency is affirmed.
Little Free Libraries:
Philip Beltz and Maggie Merrill proposed the concept for Little Free Libraries at
two of the Town’s beaches. Literature was distributed and reviewed. Maggie, director of Southold
Free Library, would like to create an extension of the library through the Little Free Libraries program.
It would engage the public with a “take a book leave a book concept” ( a mini lending library at the
beach) while raising awareness of what the library has to offer. The boxes would be maintained by
the library volunteers. Wood materials would be used for construction and built to mirror local
architecture. The work could possibly be done by retired area carpenters. The library would take
responsibility for stocking and restocking the boxes. An informational email will be sent the Town
Board recommending the program for Town Beach and Kennys Beach. If successful, the program
can be expanded to other beaches.
Signage
: Philip Beltz reported on behalf of the Youth Bureau. The group is suggesting signage
outside the Recreation Center to announce upcoming Town programs similar to the one in use
roadside in front of Down’s Farm. The sign would advertise Town events only. It is believed the
signage will boast attendance and program participation. Ken Reeves can use it to announce
registration dates and post other information as well. Ken will price a sidewalk sign.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:15 PM. The next meeting was not scheduled at this time.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Foote
Committee Secretary
