SPECIFICATIONS FOR SLURRY SEAL
It is the intent of these specifications to insure the fact that the
slurry seal contractor submitting a bid for the work realizes that the
standards and requirements of the contract are at least equal to the
standards set by the International Slurry Seal Association guide
Specifications A-105 , dated February 1972 .
SCOPE
The work covered by this specification consists of furnishing all plant ,
labor , equipment , and materials in performing all operations necessary
in connection with the application of slurry seal surface on the
designated surface , in complete and strict accordance with the
specifications .
APPLICABLE SPECIFICATIONS
The materials used in the composition of the slurry seal surface shall
be in strict accordance with the following specifications and shall pass
the necessary testing procedures as follows :

SPECIFICATIONS FOR MINERAL FILLER
ASTM 0242-64 Mineral fillers for bituminous mixture
At the discretion of the Contracting Officer', any of the materials used
in the Slurry Surface may be tested according to the above procedures .
SPECIFICATIONS FOR ASPHALT EMULSION USED IN SLURRY SEAL
The asphlat emulsion shall conform to the requirements of a cationic
quick-set emulsion , type CSS-1H . This emulsion shall pass the positive
particle test for cationic emulsions and shall show a PH factor of 6 . 5 .
The cationic quick-setting emulsion shall show a positive break and
resistance to rain in 1 to 2 hours .
The contractor shall furnish a certified statement from the emulsion
manufacturer giving analysis of the base asphalt used in the manufactor
of the emulsion . The statement shall also certify that the material
represented in a true cationic quick-set emulsion passing all the above
testing procedures .
SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE AGGREGATE USED IN SLURRY SEAL
The mineral aggregate shall consist of natural of manufactured slag or
crushed . stone . The aggregate shall be clean and free from vegetable
matter and other deleterious substances . When tested by AASHO T176 , the
aggregate blend shall have a sand equivalent of not less than 45 .
Mineral fillers such as Portland Cement , Limestone Dust , Fly Ash and
others shall be considered as part of the blended aggregate and shall be
used in mimimun required amounts . They shall meet the gradation
requirements of ASTM D242-64 . Mineral fillers shall only be used if
needed to improve the workability of the mix or the gradation of the
aggregate . The combined mineral aggregate shall conform to the
following gradation when tested by the previously mentioned test :

WATER
All water used with the slurry mixture shall be potable and free from
harmful solubla salts .
LABORATORY TESTING
Source's of all materials shall be selected prior to the time the
materials are required for use in the work . All samples shall be taken
according to previously mentioned methods . All materials shall be
pertested in a qualified laboratory as their suitability for use in
Slurry Seal . The theoretical asphalt content shall be determined . The
laboratory shall also determine if a mineral filler is required , and if
so , how much should be used . Test samples shall be made and tested on as
Wet Track Abrasion Machine .
A complete laboratory analysis and test report accompanied by abrated
and unabrated slurry samples shall be submitted by the Contractor before
the job starts .
At least three days prior to the start of Slurry application a Job-mix
formula for the Slurry Mixture shall be submitted to the Contracting
Officer for approval . No Slurry shall be applied until such approval is
received in writing from the Contracting Officer .
The Job-Mix formula shall include the following :
1 . Sieve analysis of aggregate used
2 . % of mineral filler
3 . % of water
4 . % of asphalt emulsion
5 . Unit weight of Dry Aggregate in lbs . / cu . ft . loose and compacted .
6 . Sample mixes should be evaluated by acceptable testing procedures as
to their setting time , mixing characteristics , resistance to rain and
abrasion . The results of the wet track abrasion test should be
included in this report .
7 . Observed effects of moisture content on the specific weights for the
test aggregate .

PREPARATION OF THE SURFACE
Immediately prior to the application of the Slurry Seal the surface
shall be cleaned of all loose material , silt spots , vegetation and other
objectionable material . Any standard method will be acceptable , except
water flushing will not be permitted in areas where considerable cracks
are present in the pavement surface . When required a tack coat of 4
parts water , 1 part cationic emulsion shall be applied to all concrete
surfaces prior to the application of the Slurry Seal . This shall be
applied at air temperature and allowed to cure before the slurry
operation .
COMPOSITION AND RATE OF APPLICATION OF THE SLURRY MIX
The amount of asphalt emulsion to be blended with the aggregate shall be
that as determined by the laboratory report after final adjustments in
the field . A minimum amount of water will be added as necessary to
obtain a fluid homogeneous mixture . The rate of application shall be a
minimum of 10 lbs . , but not greater than 15 lbs . of aggregate per sq . yd .
The engineer will give final approval to the design and rate of
application used .
WEATHER
The Slurry Seal shall not be applied if the pavement or the air
temperature is 55 degrees F . or below and falling , but may be applied
when both the air and pavement temp . is 45 degrees F . or above and
rising . The mixture should not be applied if high relative humidity
prolongs the curing time beyond a reasonable amount .
TRAFFIC CONTROL
Suitable methods such as barricades , flagmen , pilot cars , etc . shall be
used to protect the uncured slurry surface from all types of traffic ,
Any damage to the uncured slurry will be the responsiblility of the
contractor . The engineer or Contracting Officer shall give final
approval of the method used . If damage occurs where suitable means have
been made to protect the uncured slurry , violators will be prosecuted
and the contractor will be reimbursed for the damages .
APPLICATION OF THE SLURRY SURFACE
A . General - The surface shall be fogged with water directly preceding
the spreader . The Slurry mixture shall be of the desired consistancy
when deposited on the surface and no additional elements shall be added .
Total time of mixing shall not exceed four minutes . A sufficient amount
of slurry shall be kept in all parts of the spreader at all times so the
complete coverage is obtained . No lumping , balling or unmixed aggregate
shall be permitted . No segregation of the emulsion and the aggregate
fines from the coarse aggregate shall be permitted . If the coarse

B . Joints - No excessive build up no unsightly appearance shall be
permitted along longitudinal or transverse joint.
C . Handwork - Approved squeeges shall be used to spread the slurry in
the areas not accessible to the slurry mixer . Care will be exercised in
leaving no unsightly appearance from hand work .
D . Curing - Treated areas will be permitted to cure until such time as
the Engineer permits the opening to tr,ffic .
STOCKPILING OF AGGREGATE
Precautions shall be taked to insure that stockpiles do not become
contaminated with oversized rock , clay , silt , or excessive amounts of
moisture . The stockpile shall be kept in areas that drain readily .
Segregation of the aggregate shall not be permitted .
STORAGE
The contractor shall provide suitable storage facilities for the asphalt
emulsion . The container shall be equipped to prevent water from
entering the emulsion . Suitable heat shall be provided to prevent
freezing .
SAMPLING
Samples of materials and of the finished slurry surface shall be
furnished by the contractor as directed by the Engineer (or Contracting
Officer) during the progress of the work . Test reports may be requested
of the contractor as new materials arrive .
EQUIPMENT
All equipment , tools , and machines used in the performance of this work
shall be maintained in satisfactory working order at all times .
Descriptive information on the slurry mixing equipment to be used shall
be submitted for approval not less than 10 days before the work starts .
Slurry Mixing Equipment - The slurry mixing machine shall be a continues
flow mixing unit , and be capable of delivering a predetermined
proportion of aggregate , water , and asphalt emulsion to the mixing
chamber and to discharge the thoroughly mixed product on a continuos
basis . The aggregate shall be prewetted just prior to mixing with the
emulsion . The mixing chamber of the mixing unit shall be capable of
thoroughly mixing all the ingredients together to form the proper blend .
No violent mixing shall be permitted .
The slurry mixing machine shall be equipped with an approved fines
feeder that provides and accurate metering device or method to introduce
a predetermined amount of moneral filler into the mixer at the same time
and locations the aggregate is fed . The fines feeder shall be used
whenever added mineral filler is a part of the aggregate blend .
The mixing machine shall be equipped with a water pressure system and
fog type spray bar adequate for the complete fogging of the surface
prior to the spreading equipment , with a maximum application of 0. 05
gallons per sq . yd . The slurry machine must contain a 8 yd . storage
capacity to properly mix and apply a minimum of eight tons of Slurry
Seal .
Spreading Equipment - Attached to the mixing machine shall be a
mechanical type squeegee distributor equipped with hydraulic augers and
flexible material in contact with the surface to prevent the loss of
slurry from the distributor . It shall be maintained so as to prevent
loss of slurry on varying grades and crowniby adjustments to insure
uniform spread . The box shall be kept clean and buildup of asphalt and
aggregate shall not be permitted .
CLEANING EQUIPMENT
Power brooms , power blowers , air compressors , water flushing equipment
and hand brooms shall be suitable for cleaning the surface and cracks of
the old surface .
AUXILARY EQUIPMENT
Hand squeegees , shovels and other equipment shall be provided as
necessary to perform the work .

SPECIFICATIONS FOR SLURRY SEAL
It is 'the intent of these specifications to insure the fact that the
slurry seal contractor submitting a bid for the work realizes that the
standards and requirements of the contract are at least equal to the
standards set by the International Slurry Seal Association guide
Specifications A-105 , dated February 1972 .
SCOPE
The work covered by this specification consists of furnishing all plant ,
labor , equipment , and materials in performing all operations necessary
in connection with the application of slurry seal surface on the
designated surface , in complete and strict accordance with the
specifications .
APPLICABLE SPECIFICATIONS
The materials used in the composition of the slurry seal surface shall
be in strict accordance with the following specifications and shall pass
the necessary testing procedures as follows :

At the discretion of the Contracting Officer'', any of the materials used
in the Slurry Surface may be tested according to the above procedures .
SPECIFICATIONS FOR ASPHALT EMULSION USED IN SLURRY SEAL
The asphlat emulsion shall conform to the requirements of a cationic
quick-set emulsion , type CSS-1H . This emulsion shall pass the positive
particle test for cationic emulsions and shall show a PH factor of 6 . 5 .
The cationic quick-setting emulsion shall show a positive break and
resistance to rain in 1 to 2 hours .
The contractor shall furnish a certified statement from the emulsion
manufacturer giving analysis of the base asphalt used in the manufactor
of the emulsion . The statement shall also certify that the material
represented in a true cationic quick-set emulsion passing all the above
testing procedures .

SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE AGGREGATE USED IN SLURRY SEAL
The mineral aggregate shall consist of natural of manufactured slag or
crushed . stone . The aggregate shall be clean and free from vegetable
matter and other deleterious substances . When tested by AASHO T176 , the
aggregate blend shall have a sand equivalent of not less than 45 .
Mineral fillers such as Portland Cement , Limestone Dust , Fly Ash and
others shall be considered as part of the blended aggregate and shall be
used in mimimun required amounts . They shall meet the gradation
requirements of ASTM 0242-64 . Mineral fillers shall only be used if
needed to improve the workability of the mix or the gradation of the
aggregate . The combined mineral aggregate shall conform to the
following gradation when tested by the previously mentioned test :

WATER
All water used with the slurry mixture shall be potable and free from
harmful solublb salts .
LABORATORY TESTING
Sbutbbb bf all materials shall be selected prior to the time the
materials are required for use in the work . All samples shall be taken
according to previously mentioned methods . All materials shall be
pertested in a qualified laboratory as their suitability for use in
Slurry Seal . The theoretical asphalt content shall be determined . The
laboratory shall also determine if a mineral filler is required , and if
so , how much should be used . Test samples shall be made and tested on as
Wet Track Abrasion Machine .
A complete laboratory analysis and test report accompanied by abrated
and unabrated slurry samples shall be submitted by the Contractor before
the job starts .
At least three days prior to the start of Slurry application a Job-mix
formula for the Slurry Mixture shall be submitted to the Contracting
Officer for approval . No Slurry shall be applied until such approval is
received in writing from the Contracting Officer .
The Job-Mix formula shall include the following :
1 . Sieve analysis of aggregate used
2 . % of mineral filler
3 . % of water
4 . % of asphalt emulsion
5 . Unit weight of Dry Aggregate in lbs . /cu . ft . loose and compacted .
6 . Sample mixes should be evaluated by acceptable testing procedures as
to their setting time , mixing characteristics , resistance to rain and
abrasion . The results of the wet track abrasion test should be
included in this report .
7 . Observed effects of moisture content on the specific weights for the
test aggregate .
PREPARATION OF THE SURFACE
Immediately prior to the application of the Slurry Seal the surface
shall be cleaned of all loose material , silt spots , vegetation and other
objectionable material . Any standard method will be acceptable , except
water flushing will not be permitted in areas where considerable cracks
are present in the pavement surface . When required a tack coat of 4
parts water , 1 part cationic emulsion shall be applied to all concrete
surfaces prior to the application of the Slurry Seal . This shall be
applied at air temperature and allowed to cure before the slurry
operation .
COMPOSITION AND RATE OF APPLICATION OF THE SLURRY MIX
The amount of asphalt emulsion to be blended with the aggregate shall be
that as determined by the laboratory report after final adjustments in
the field . A minimum amount of water will be added as necessary to
obtain a fluid homogeneous mixture . The rate of application shall be a
minimum of 10 lbs . , but not greater than 15 lbs . of aggregate per sq . yd .
The engineer will give final approval to the design and rate of
application used .
WEATHER
The Slurry Seal shall not be applied if the pavement or the air
temperature is 55 degrees F . or below and falling , but may be applied
when both the air and pavement temp . is 45 degrees F . or above and
rising . The mixture should not be applied if high relative humidity
prolongs the curing time beyond a reasonable amount .
TRAFFIC CONTROL
Suitable methods such as barricades , flagmen , pilot cars , etc . shall be
used to protect the uncured slurry surface from all types of traffic ,
Any damage to the uncured slurry will be the responsiblility of the
contractor . The engineer or Contracting Officer shall give final
approval of the method used . If damage occurs where suitable means have
been made to protect the uncured slurry , violators will be prosecuted
and the contractor will be reimbursed for the damages .
APPLICATION OF THE SLURRY SURFACE
A . General - The surface shall be fogged with water directly preceding
the spreader . The Slurry mixture shall be of the desired consistancy
when deposited on the surface and no additional elements shall be added .
Total time of mixing shall not exceed four minutes . A sufficient amount
of slurry shall be kept in all parts , of the spreader at all times so the
complete coverage is obtained . No lumping , balling or unmixed aggregate
shall be permitted . No segregation of the emulsion and the aggregate
fines from the coarse aggregate shall be permitted . If the coarse
aggregate settles to the bottom of the mix , the slurry will be removed
from the pavement . No excessive breaking of the emulsion in the spreader
box will be permitted . No streaks such as left by oversized aggregate
