4 ) The hammer mill componentry is undersi2ed. The rotor
discs are 1 1/2" rather than the 1 3/4" specif:.ed. The
rotor shaft diameter is only 4 7/8" as opposed •:o the 6"
specified. The hammer mounting rod shafts axe only 1
7/1.6" as opposed to the 2" specified.
5 ) The hammer cutting inserts are replaceable but apparently
not reversible as specified. Therefore twice as many
inserts would be reniiirod_
6 ) The screens provided are only 1" thick as opposed to the
1. 1/4" 6pecified . ThAre is question whether Fuel
Harvester meets the total screen area specifics.
7 ) fuel Harvester does not provide t-h, dt)al discharge augers
specified. It has a belt discharge system which it
claims to use to prevent jamming. What it is a cheap
system which is subject to belt damage from small metal
debris, such as nails, driven down from the hammarMill.
a ) The Fuel narvc*tcr is not *quipped with rho 3/811
replaceable wear plates specified for the discharge
chute.
9 ) The discharge conveyor is only 20" wide as opposed to the
36" specified.
10 ) The Fuel Harvester claims some advantages over the
specifications issued for the cab and loader. After
consideratiuii, Lhese advantages appoar to be non-
existent. The reason the cab is tilted to view the
hopper is because it is farther away from the napper than
it would be if t3,u uairier was the length spccified. For
the same reason it is higher thar. desired and must
therefore be folded for transport. The loader reaches
farther than spt2ui.Lied because it is farther from tho
hopper than it would be if the carrier was to
specification.
11 ) The specification calls for the grapple to rotate through
a continuous 360 degrees. Fuel harvester claims a
rotation of 550 degrees . Thi & would require either the
invention of a new system of geometry or it means that
its design require -reversal of rotation for some reason
at that given point and is tlletaLure not continuous .
12 ) Fuel Harvester ' s service capacities are well under

Minimum Ground Clearance
The grinder, trailer and all related components shall maintain a minimum
of 12 inches ground clearance.
An important feature of Fuel Harvesters equipment is that we
maintain a minimum 12 inches of ground clearance. There is
always a buildup of sawdust and wood shavings under wood
processing equipment and ground clearance must be adequate
for the operator to clear away the material with common
tools such as a yard rake. This requires a minimum of 12
inches ground clearance. Inability to maintain a clean
surface under the equipment because of lack of ground
clearance increases equipment maintenance problems and the
• danger of fires.
Fuel Harvesters Equipment, Inc. 2 4/93
• Operator Access
Stairs and walkways shall provide easy operator access to the top of the
tub for service, and ease of removing contaminants from the tub. OSHA
approved hand rails and non-skid steel plate shall be used in all areas
where operators walk.
3. ENGINE
Type and Horsepower
With the grapple loader the horsepower shall not be less than 525 HP
with all accessories attached.
With the grapple loader the horsepower shall not be less than 575 HP
with all accessories attached.
The engine shall be a heavy-duty diesel, four cycle, wet-sleeve design
with not less than ten (10) years experience in service.
Note: Other engine options are available.
Emergency Shutdown
There shall be installed an automatic emergency shutdown on the diesel
• engine for high temperature or low oil pressure.
Engine Cover
There shall be an engine cover for security and protection. It shall have
wire mesh screen cloth on the sides for maximum air circulation.
Wood and Yard Waste grinding creates a fairly dusty environment
for operation of the diesel engine. Excessive dust in the air intake
and plugging of the radiator are problems that will shorten engine
life if not addressed in the machine design. On FHE grinders,
special consideration is given to the engine location, size and
location of the fresh air intake and size of the cooling system. These
items are located as far as possible from the heaviest concentrations
of dirty air, and help to prevent excessive engine wear and
overheating.
Fresh Air Intake
The fresh air intake shall be a two stage filter with a Turbo type pre-
cleaner. It shall be located a minimum of ten (10) feet above ground
level and a minimum of eight (8) feet horizontally from the tub.
Fuel Harvesters Equipment, Inc. 3 4/93
• Engine Cooling System
To prevent excessive plugging of the engine radiator by dust particles, the
radiator shall be located a minimum four (4) feet above ground level to
the bottom of the radiator, and twelve (12) feet horizontally from the tub
and material transfer conveyors. It shall draw fresh air through the
front of the radiator from outside the machine area, not off of the engine.
The radiator fan shall be a suction type (not a blower).
Blower fans can draw wood fibers into the engine enclosure through the
side panels and create a fire hazard.
4. POWERTRAIN
Power Take Off
Power from the 575 H.P. engine shall be transferred to the machine
through a manually-operated Twin Disc clutch (or equal) with three (3)
18 inch clutch plates, and connected to an indirect V-belt drive system.
Power from the 525 H.P. engine shall be transferred to the machine
through a manually-operated Twin Disc clutch (or equal) with three (3)
18 inch clutch plates, and connected to an indirect V-belt drive system.
Note: An 18" clutch is required on all grinders of 500 H.P. or more
• when the PTO is supplied and warranted by Caterpillar, Inc.
One of the most important features of Fuel Harvesters grinders is the
indirect V-Belt drive. The indirect V-Belt drive has been proven in
service with FHE wood grinders since 1982. The indirect V-Belt
drive insulates the diesel engine's crankshaft and piston rods from the
constant vibration and shock loads generated by the hammermill
during normal grinding operations. This important feature extends
the life of engine components and reduces costs due to engine repairs.
The indirect V-Belt drive requires very little service and the life of
the V-Belts is normally about 5 years. The belts are easy to change
when required and are less expensive to maintain than any other type
of engine protection device.
Hammermill Driveline
The Hammermill shall be driven through a V-Belt "indirect drive"
system that is capable of absorbing constant vibration and shock loads
generated by the hammermill.
Because of the proven reliability of the Indirect V-Belt Drive design, all
components of the hammermill drive line from the rear of the engine PTO
to the front bearing of the hammermill shall be warranted for 36 months.
Vibration dampening is necessary in order to insulate and protect the
engine from vibration and shock loads generated by the hammermill
during normal operation. The most common method of vibration
Fuel Harvesters Equipment, Inc. 4 4/93
dampening (the one used in the forest products industry and the scrap
metals industry) is by transferring power from the engine driveline
to the hammermill drive line with a set of V-Belts. V-belts provide
vibration dampening which reduces the shock transfer from the
hammermill to the driveline U-Joints and engine crankshaft. The
result is longer life and lower maintenance of the complete driveline
and engine.
Sudden stopping of the hammermill: It is extremely rare to stop an
FHE hammermill suddenly when in normal operation and requires
something tougher than wood and yard waste to do it. In those rare
instances when it does happen, the V-Belts will flex, absorb the
initial shock, and then bring the engine to a stop without damage to the
engine or driveline.
Some manufacturers promote direct drive with driveline breakaway
devices as an equivalent to the "indirect drive". They address the rare
sudden stoppage of the hammermill with this kind of device but do not
provide the important vibration dampening achieved through a V-Belt
"indirect drive" system, and the cost to maintain these devices will
run several times as much as the V-belt system.
5. TUB ASSEMBLY
Tub Size and Construction
The tub shall have a minimum of 12 feet across the top opening.
The tub shall have a minimum of 10 feet diameter at the base inside.
The tub shall be a minimum of 60 inches deep.
Loading height shall not exceed 10 feet 6 inches from ground level.
The tub shall be constructed of minimum 1/4-inch thick material and
strengthened vertically with 1/4" thick structural reinforcements and
laterally with (2) 3" X 3/8" angle iron bands and (1) 3" X 3/8"
flat iron band.
Tub Floor
The tub floor shall be a minimum of 1/2 inch thick T-1 steel or
equivalent.
The tub floor shall be mounted on a supporting framework constructed of
minimum 5" X 2" channel iron. The framework shall be an interlocking
pattern with a maximum of 20 inches between frame members.
•
Fuel Harvesters Equipment, Inc. 5 4/93
• Tilt-Tub
The tub and floor assembly shall tilt hydraulically giving easy access to
the hammermill.
On machines that have a grapple loader installed, the tub is designed to
tilt 30 degrees.
Greater tilt is not required since the grapple can be used to empty
the tub if necessary.
On machines without a grapple loader installed, the tub is designed to
tilt 85 degrees.
The greater angle of tilt allows the operator to easily empty the
tub if necessary.
Tub Rollers
The tub shall be supported by a minimum of ten (10) solid steel support
rollers and four(4) adjustable guide rollers.
Tub support rollers shall be mounted using a shaft 1 7/16 inches
diameter and two pillowblock bearings.
The guide rollers shall be mounted on automotive type hubs and bearings
• for long life and ease of service.
Tub Rotation
Power from the engine shall be transferred to the tub drive system
utilizing a hydraulic motor.
Tub rotation speed shall be fully adjustable in forward and reverse from
0 to 8 RPM, an RPM sensing device shall slow or stop the tub
automatically in case of power loss.
The tub shall be rotated with a chain and sprocket drive using a minimum
5000 Ib/ft chain, Whitney #81 XH or equal.
6. GRINDING CYLINDER (HAMMERMILL)
The size and construction of the hammermill is very important
because it is where all the work is being done and it takes a
tremendous amount of abuse in normal operation.
Hammermill Specifications.
The hammermill shall be 56 inches in length.
•
Fuel Harvesters Equipment, Inc. 6 4/93
The hammermill shall contain 19 rotor plates, each 1-1/2" thick and

Capacity
The Grapple Loader shall have a minimum 1/3 cord grapple, with a
minimum 2000 lbs. lift capacity at a reach of 25 feet.
A lift capacity of 2000 lbs, at 25 feet is required because of the way
yard waste binds together when in a pile. The loader is not only
required to lift up to 1000 lbs. of material, but must be able to pull it
out of a pile at the same time. This requires far greater force than
just lifting the material. Using a loader with less capacity will
dramatically increase the operating and maintenance expense, while
shortening the useful life of the equipment.
Location
The Grapple Loader shall be located between the engine and the tub so that
the operator does not have to work over the engine.
General Specifications
Length of Boom 25 feet.
Lift Capacity 2000 lbs. at 25 feet.

Stabilizers Legs Hydraulically operated, 14 ft. spread, hinged type
(fold-up), allow quick setup time and excellent
stability of operator station.
Operator Cab
The operator's platform and seat shall be located in a position
that allows the operator to see into the grinder tub, and to a
minimum depth of 3 ft. below the rim.
This is required in order to be able to see and remove non-woody
items before they reach the hammermill, and when unloading the tub
with the grapple.
The operator cab shall rotate with the loader boom so that the
operator is always facing the work area.
If the operator platform does not turn with the grapple, then operator
fatigue will reduce the safety and efficiency of the operation.
Operator platform rotation with beneath-the-seat style foot controls.
Side mount joystick controls. On/Off control for tub rotation. Enclosed
operator cab with windshield wiper, heater, air conditioner and noise
suppression kit. Hydraulic operated fold down cab for transport.

maximum opening 60", closed 12", width 25". Cylinders 3-1/2"
diameter x 10" long with 2" diameter rods. Heavy duty construction,
minimum weight of ample to be - 800 lbs.
2. TUB FLANGE EXTENSION
An extension for the top of the tub shall be available which bolts onto the
existing flange making the tub one foot higher (11'6"), and two feet wider
(14').
The extension is used primarily when grinding brush and tree limbs, and
when better containment of long limbs is desired, or when a wide bucket
is being used to load the grinder.
3. FLOW RESTRICTOR BARS
Flow restrictor bars are mounted on tub floor next to the hammermill,
and are used to slow the feed rate of fast flowing materials such as leaves
and grass into the hammermill. They are also used to restrict the feed
rate of stringy materials such as palm fronds. They should be installed
whenever the engine and hammermill are frequently overloaded by the
• material being processed.
Fuel Harvesters Equipment, Inc. 1 1 4/93
4. MAGNETICS (For Ferrous Metals Removal)
A conveyor mounted magnetic pulley assembly is available which is used
for ferrous metal removal. Offered is either an 8 inch diameter magnetic
pulley that replaces the standard pulley on the stacking conveyor plus a
metals slide, or a 15 inch diameter magnetic pulley, a special conveyor
end assembly, longer elevating conveyor belt (crescent top), and a metals
slide.
Tub magnets are available which are mounted to the tub walls inside the
tub. They do not stop all metal from going into the hammermill but are
effective at reducing the amount that does pass through and they
substantially reduce wear and tear. Normally used as a set of four (4).
Each magnetic is 18" X 10.5" X 3.75" (Patent Pending)
5. TRAILER DOLLY
A trailer dolly allows the operator to move the machine around the site
with a front-end loader. This is especially beneficial when cleaning up
wood and sawdust from around the machine for fire hazard reduction.
6. AIR COMPRESSOR
A 5 HP Air Compressor mounted on the grinder is useful for regular
cleaning of the engine radiator, for air operated grease guns and air
operated hand tools. It is powered by a gasoline engine and comes with 50
ft. of air hose and a hose reel.

36 Month - DR I UEL I WE Warranty
The Indirect Drive design provided on all FHE tub grinders is far
superior than the driveline designs offered by many other
manufacturers and FHE backs up its design with a 36 month
warranty.
The major components of the FHE grinder that are warranted for a
period of 36 months are as foilows:
I. Hydraulic or Mechanical:
Hammermill Driveline, from the rear of the diesel engine
PTO to the front end of the hammermill shaft, this includes
• all the bearings, drive shafts, V-belts and U-Joints
that are located in between. The 36 month warranty on
these items is possible because of the shock absorbing
qualities of the Indirect Drive System offered on the FHE
machine.
II. Mechanical (when specified):
Tub Drive System, major components included are the 4-
speed truck transmission (used as a speed reducer),
and the truck differential (used as a speed reducer and
tub drive). The 36 month warranty is available on these
items because they have a proven track record of dependability
in all tub grinder applications.
Should any of the above items fail within the 36
month period they will be replaced at no charge.
All terms and conditions of the standard 12 month warranty also apply to the 36 month
• warranty.

FHE P12XHD-65OG INDUSTRIAL TUB GRINDER
This is the second of two bid proposals for a Tub Grinder for the Town
of Southold. Both units are proven to be superior to competitive
models in design, production, dependability, and workmanship. The
areas in which these units exceed the specifications will appear in
bold print. FHE meets or exceeds all specifications not addressed.
SPECIFICATION COMPLIANCE
POWER UNIT:
• 650 FwHP Exceeds- When the "Cat" 3412
to be preset at 1850 650 HP engine is operated at
RPM for efficiency 1850 RPM the horsepower is
and hammer life reduced to 580 HP. Because
of the indirect drive system
on FHE tub grinders the
engine RPM does not have to
be reduced to achieve a
• hammermill speed of 1850
RPM (see HAMMERMILL: -
direct drive below).
Therefore we exceed this
specification because the FHE
unit will utilize the full 650
FwHP. The result is increased
production.

Inability to maintain a clean
surface under the equipment because of lack of ground
clearance increases equipment maintenance problems and the
danger of fires.
•

Note: Other engine options are available.
Emergency Shutdown
There shall be installed an automatic emergency shutdown on the diesel
engine for high temperature or low oil pressure.
Engine Cover
There shall be an engine cover for security and protection. It shall have
wire mesh screen cloth on the sides for maximum air circulation.
Wood and Yard Waste grinding creates a fairly dusty environment
for operation of the diesel engine. Excessive dust /n the air Intake
and plugging of the radiator are problems that will shorten engine
life if not addressed In the machine design.
•
Fuel Harvesters Equipment, Inc. 3 4/93
• Engine Cooling System
To prevent excessive plugging of the engine radiator by dust particles, the
engine's radiator shall be located a minimum four (4) feet above ground
level to the bottom of the radiator, and twelve (12) feet horizontally
from the tub and material transfer conveyors. It shall draw fresh air
through the front of the radiator from outside the machine area, not off of
the engine. The radiator fan shall be a suction type (not a blower).
Blower fans can draw wood fibers into the engine enclosure through the
side panels and create a fire hazard.
4. POWERTRAIN
Power Take Off
Power from the 575 H.P. engine or the 650 H.P. engine shall be
transferred to the machine through a manually-operated Twin Disc clutch
(or equal) with three (3) 18 inch clutch plates, and connected to an
indirect V-belt drive system.
Note: An 18" clutch is required on all grinders of 500 H.P. or more
when the PTO is supplied and warranted by Caterpillar, Inc.
One of the most important features of Fuel Harvesters grinders is the
. indirect V-Belt drive.
The most common method of vibration
dampening (the one used in the forest products industry and the scrap
metals industry) is by transferring power from the engine driveline
to the hammermill drive line with a set of V-Belts. V-belts provide
Fuel Harvesters Equipment, Inc. 4 4/93
• vibration dampening which reduces the shock transfer from the
hammermill to the driveline U-Joints and engine crankshaft. The
result is longer life and lower maintenance of the complete driveline
and engine.
Sudden stopping of the hammermill: It is extremely rare to stop an
FHE hammermill suddenly when in normal operation and requires
something tougher than wood and yard waste to do it /n those rare
instances when it does happen, the V-Belts will flex, absorb the
initial shock, and then bring the engine to a stop without damage to the
engine or driveline.
• The tub shall have a minimum of 10 feet diameter at the base inside.
The tub shall be a minimum of 60 inches deep.
Loading height shall riot exceed 10 feet 6 inches from ground level.
The tub shall be constructed of minimum 3/8-inch thick material and
strengthened vertically with 3/8" thick structural reinforcements and
laterally with (2) 3" X 3/8" angle iron bands and (1) 3" X 3/8"
flat iron band.
Tub Rollers
The tub shall be supported by a minimum of eleven (11) solid steel
support rollers and five (5) adjustable guide rollers.
Tub support rollers shall be mounted using a shaft 1 15/16 inches
diameter and two pillowblock bearings.
7500 Ib/ft chain, Rex #238 or equal.
6. GRINDING CYLINDER (HAMMERMILL)
The size and construction of the hammermill is very Important
because it is where all the work is being done and it takes a
tremendous amount of abuse in normal operation.
Hammermill Specifications.
The hammermill shall be 62 inches in length.

Capacity
The Grapple Loader shall have a minimum 1/3 cord grapple, with a
minimum 2000 lbs. lift capacity at a reach of 25 feet.
A lift capacity of 2000 lbs. at 25 feet is required because of the way
yard waste binds together when in a pile. The loader is not only
required to lift up to 1000 lbs. of material, but must be able to pull it
out of a pile at the same time. This requires far greater force than
just lifting the material. Using a loader with less capacity will
dramatically increase the operating and maintenance expense, while
shortening the useful life of the equipment.

stability of operator station.

They should be installed
whenever the engine and hammermill are frequently overloaded by the
material being processed.
Fuel Harvesters Equipment, Inc. 1 1 4/93
4. MAGNETICS (For Ferrous Metals Removal)
A magnetic pulley assembly is available which is used for ferrous metal
removal. Offered is either an 8 inch diameter magnetic pulley that
replaces the standard pulley on the stacking conveyor plus a metals slide,
or a 15 inch diameter magnetic pulley, a special conveyor end assembly,
longer elevating conveyor belt (crescent top), and a metals slide.

The major components of the FHE grinder that are warranted for a
period of 36 months are as follows:
I. Hydraulic or Mechanical:
Hammermill Driveline, from the rear of the diesel engine
PTO to the front end of the hammermill shaft, this includes
all the bearings, drive shafts, V-belts and U-Joints
that are located in between.
All terms and conditions of the standard 12 month warranty also apply to the 36 month
warranty.
