HomeMy WebLinkAbout06/09/2014 Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes June 09, 2014 YB Present: Sarah Benjamin , Patricia Mellas, Laura Held, Andrea Nydegger, Cristina Witzke, Jillian Ruroede, Robert Duffin, Karen McLaughlin, Officer Bill Excused: Brewer, Councilman Bill Ruland and Phillip Beltz. Elaine White, Jeff Standish, Jacob Branker and Councilman Jim Dinizio. Approval of Minutes The minutes of May 12, 2014 were approved. Youth Advisory Council (YAC) Membership: Many YAC will graduate in June and new students will be needed. Greenport has two students who completed applications and Mattituck has additional students. Patty was asked to contact Eddie Ward from Southold who submitted a resume but not an application. Follow-Up Report:  The Bike Swap was a major success, 37 bicycles and tricycles were brought to the Recreation Center and 14 were donated to CAST. Sarah reported that the bikes were donated in one day to needy students. Office Bill Brewer and Country Wide Cycle provided safety instruction. Suffolk County Summer Works Program: Phillip has received sufficient referrals from schools and interviewed several students from Mattituck and one from Southold. He will interview several from Greenport at the end of the week. This year the Town has requested five positions (2 students Public Works, 2 students Highway and 1 student for Human Resource Center.) Suffolk County Youth Bureau Funding: The Town was informed that they will receive full funding this year for its youth programs (Youth Bureau, DARE and Family Service League Counseling.) Planning of Summer Events: Outdoor Movie in Tasker Park: NY Organ Donor Network has o offered to sponsor movie night with $1000 contribution. Decision to feature the movie “Up” as it appeals to all. Will be scheduled in July or August. Suggestion to hand out helium balloons. North Fork Ospreys All Star Game “Southold Youth Bureau Night” o th scheduled for Saturday, July 12 at 7 p.m. in Cochran Park. Facebook: Bike Swap event was posted and photos posted thereafter. Intergenerational Project Nexus Tablets: The last session for the school year had 57 students working with seniors. This will be replicated next year. 1 East End Youth Regional Needs Assessment Public Meeting: Phillip reported that approximately 30 people attended the community meeting in Flanders to share comments regarding the report and the needs of local youth. Other: Karen and Sarah discussed a forthcoming produce program. Suggestion by Karen to discuss herb boxes for HRC at the next meeting. th Next Meeting Date and Time: Peconic Monday, July 14 at 5:00 p.m. at the Lane Community Center.
