Box 1179 Southold, New York 11971-0959 Fax (631) 765-1823 Telephone (631) 765-1889 OFFICE OF THE SUPERVISOR TOWN OF SOUTHOLD Economic Development Committee (EDC) Meeting Minutes May 09, 2014 Present: John Stype, Rona Smith, Carolyn Fahey, Councilman Bill Ruland, Supervisor Scott Russell and Phillip Beltz. Also present: Karen McLaughlin, Director Human Services, Brett Excused/Absent: Sanchez and Matt Hetterich of Utopia Home Care. Steve Latham, Donielle Cardinale, Tony Cocheo, Linton Duell and Ian Wile. The ribbon cutting began at 3:00 p.m. at the Mattituck Florist and the meeting began at 3:20 p.m. at the Human Resource Center. Ribbon Cutting of Mattituck Farmers’ Market: EDC attended ribbon cutting of “pilot.” Presentation by Utopia Home Care Inc.: Request to utilize Town facility (Peconic Lane Community Center) to offer Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) classes, once a month for two weeks, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Upon completing classes (no charge for classes taught by nurses with no obligations for employment) CNAs are paid between $12-$14 an hour. The Dept. of Labor expects a 53% growth rate for home health aides in the next decade; Southold has the demographic to support this paraprofessional training. Utopia currently offers classes in Southampton and Riverhead. Utopia will pay Town to use the site. Local Development Corporation: Phillip reported interviews will be set up for applicants that submitted resumes. Internship and Job Fair: Phillip reported that the fair was an enormous success with 14 employers representing over 50 employment opportunities. 52 attendees that included high school students and graduates. Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Funding Opportunity: No suggestions from EDC for possible projects. Carolyn stated that grant requests projects must be no less than $20k, and that leveraged funds are limited to with leverage of 10% of in-kind services. Fishers Island Meeting: Phillip and Carolyn will meet with staff of Lighthouse Works fellowship program and also target some employers. Fishers Island could also be considered for Downtown Revitalization funding. th North Fork Promotion Council Summer Opening: Sat. May 17 noon – 6 p.m. in Greenport at their kiosk.
