JEFFERY T. STANDISH Town Hall
DIRECTOR PO Box 1179
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS Southold, NY 11971
Parks, Beaches and Recreation Committee
MINUTES April 29, 2014 Meeting
6:30 P.M. in the Town Hall Conference Room
Present were: Chairperson: Arthur Leudesdorf, Members: Jeffery Standish, Ken Reeves, Carlo
Gonzalez, M. Marie Cutone, John Betsch, Nancy Foote
Call to order:
Chairperson, Art Leudesdorf called the meeting to order at 6:30 P.M. Below are
discussion items:
Spring Sports
: Ken Reeves reported to the committee that Spring registration is underway. He
does not have all the current paperwork in place, it is trickling in. Art inquired about last year’s
receipts and Ken reported that last year is all up to date. There are three teams this year so far and
the North Fork Ospreys are on a resolution for the next Town Board meeting. Jeff Standish reported
that DPW has been working on the ball fields. The fields are bad from the long winter and delayed
spring. The grass is not growing as expected for this time of year. Ken emailed a notice to all teams
th
to please stay off the fields until May 5 and Jeff put up a fence to discourage use but people are
ripping the fence down and using the field. It is very difficult to police the situation and residents are
taking advantage of Ken’s good nature. Art Leudesdorf thought if this behavior continues the kids in
the long run will suffer. Unfortunately there is no repercussion for bad behavior and it’s not fair to the
folks who do play by the rules. John thought the committee could request that the parks could be
patrolled. Marie thought placement of cameras could help as well. Art requested a copy of the letter
that Ken sent out to participants and he will request time with the Town Board at the next meeting to
discuss the situation. Ken reported that Greenport Schools have requested to play a few of their
scheduled games on the Corcoran Park Ballfield this fall.
Seatow Lifejacket Program:
John Betsch spoke with Joe Frohnhoefer. Sea Tow will continue with
the Lifejacket loaner program this year. One property, Klipp Park was a problem last season. The
jackets were disappearing but Sea Tow will continue the program there as well regardless.
Strawberry Fields
: Jeff spoke with Diane Sanford from NYS Parks and discussed removal of the
cedar trees running along the middle of the field. Diane would like to ball and remove them but with
further investigation Jeff suggested cutting most down since they are straggly and not healthy. Diane
agreed and the two trees that are salvageable will be balled and moved by Wayne Mott. Jeff
reminded Wayne to fill in the hollows and be responsible to fill in the holes as they settle.
Jeff spoke to Vito Italia of the local Lions Club regarding the reseeding of the field and suggested
postponing the project until fall. The Strawberry Festival is in June and the fields will take a beating
and a spring seeding will not yield good results. Jeff suggested he speak to Bill Shuford at Laurel
Links CC to discuss the project further. Jeff would like a salt test done on the soil, ensuring optimal
growing environment. Jeff has not heard from Vito in a couple of weeks but Lions Club is committed
1
to donating$20,000. A resolution must be created for the donation. Project should be scheduled for
end of August – beginning of September. Jeff requested that Ken not schedule any event except for
smaller gatherings or use the parking lot area toward the back. Ken will fence the area off. Carlos
Gonzalez reported the Ladies Soccer group would like to play but do not want to pay for field use.
Beaches:
Beaches are scheduled to open June 28. Ken would like the bathrooms unbolted mid-
May for necessary spring spruce up. Lifeguard positions are filled. Interviews are set up for Beach
Attendants. There are 20 plus applications for this position. There are openings for swim instructors.
Candidates need to Red Cross Certified. Art will speak with the instructors at Peconic Landing to see
if they know of any instructors looking for work. The Town Beach clean ups will begin shortly. Terry
Latham is expected to grade the sand. The permit for this work is in place. John Betsch reported that
the beaches in his area on private property are loaded with large trees. Mattituck Park District is
offering a Safe Family Boating Day.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:15 PM. The next meeting was not scheduled at this time.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Foote
Committee Secretary
