The regular December meeting of the Southold Town Trustees
was the last meeting to be attended by John McNulty of Laurel
and Frank Dawson of New Suffolk, whose terms of office expired
as of January first. They each expressed their appreciation of
the public support that they have received over their many terms
in office, and said they would miss the p~easant associations
with their fellow members of the Board. They also expressed
their good wishes to their successors in office, Philip Horton
of Peconic, and Rudy Johnson of Mattituck, who were in attendance.
Their fellow members of the Board voted that a formal
115
resolution be prepared and spread on the minutes and also that
due recognition of their good services be published in the
local papers and copies thereof be presented to them. The
formal resolution is as follows:
WHEREAS John McNulty of Laurel and Frank Dawson of New
Suffolk have served 26 years and 20 years ~espectively as elected
members of the Southold Town Trustees, and
WHEREAS they both declined to seek re-election and therefore
will retire as Town Trustees on December 31, 1971, and
WHEREAS John McNulty and Frank Dawson have been faithful,
diligent and conscientious in the discharge of their duties as
Town Trustees and have acted at all times for what they believed
to be in thei>best interest of Southold Town, and without prejudice
or partisan political influence, and
WHEREAS in the conduct of the business of the Town Trustees
they have at all times been courteous, attentive and fair to all
who have appeared before them and through many strenuous and
controversial discussions, and
WHEREAS their presence will be greatly missed in our future
meetings,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: That this resolution be
spread upon the minutes of the Town Trustees and copies thereof
be suitably inscribed and presented to John McNulty and Frank
Dawson with our thanks and best wishes for many happy and carefree
years ahead.

The following letter accompanied the foregoing resolution to the
newspapers:
Dear Mr. Editor:
Few people, I think, are aware of the sincere interest in
the total welfare of Southold Town that has been shown by John
McNulty and Frank Dawson during their years as Tow~ Trustees.
Controversial as many problems are and continue to be, we who
have worked with the~, know that for their integrity and for
their honest and unbiased consideration of all points of view,
they have proven themselves worthy of our appreciation and esteem.
It is for this reason, Mr. Editor, that we would be grateful for
116
your cooperation
