Deer Management Committee
TOWN OF SOUTHOLD
MINUTES
March 18, 2014
7:00 P.M.
Southold Town Hall Conference Room
A meeting of the Deer Management Committee was held Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at the Town Hall
Conference Room, Main Rd., in Southold.
Present were: Chairperson Jeff Standish, Members: John Scaramucci, Laura Klahre, John Betsch, David
Dominy, Adam West, John Haas, Nancy Foote. Guests: John Hansen
Call to order: Jeff Standish called the meeting to order at 7:00 P.M.
Update on Current Hunting Programs: Town Nuisance program is currently running until the end of
March. Jeff reported there have been 20 deer taken to date. 30 hunters are currently on the roster with 6 from
outside the Southold area. Properties are being baited with time release feeders at each zone. There has been a
noticeable reduction in population in parts of the Bayview area where most harvested deer have come from.
Unfortunately deer are still plentiful in areas that cannot be hunted without law changes. Jeff counted 45 deer in
the Village of Southold alone. Laws currently being considered in Albany: Permit hunting on Saturday and
Sunday during shotgun season, a law that will be supported by Legislator Sweeny. Laws changing set back
from 500' to 150' and extending hunting season to March 31 are also being considered, however neither of
these laws will be supported by Legislator Sweeny. The 150' set back law would open up considerably more
acreage for hunting. Donated deer have been taken to Fish & Wildlife for processing. John Haas added that
there is a local butcher (Kenny) willing to do some of the work but Jeff spoke with Kenny and believes the
volume of meat processed needs a larger facility for service.
Peconic Land Trust declined the Town to allow hunting on their "Wolfe" property off of Bayview. They may
consider next year but are worried they will lose funding if they allow hunting on their properties.

North Fork Club - Dave Dominy would like to start a hunting club, separate from Town affiliation. The
purpose of the group would be to build community and camaraderie among hunters. The club would create a
positive influence through education and also inspire interest with young hunters.
Deer Survey: The committee reviewed the Deer Survey proposed for use on the Town website and Town
wide distribution. The committee would like the survey to be used exclusively for residents of the Town of
Southold. Some minor changes were made and the final copy will be presented to the Town Board.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
