HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/10/2014 {~4~ llFFOIx~®F 4o a~ Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes March 10, 2014 YB Present: Jeff Standish, Sarah Benjamin, Jillian Ruroede, Officer Bill Brewer, Robert Duffin, Councilman Bill Ruland and Phillip Beltz. Excused/Absent: Jacob Branker, Elaine White, Andrea Nydegger, Karen McLaughlin, Cristina Witzke, Irene Tsontakis-Bradley and Councilman Jim Dinizio. Approval of Minutes The minutes of February 10, 2014 were approved. Youth Board Membership: Three terms expire in March 2014, awaiting response from Irene. Youth Advisory Council Membership: Greenport needs additional students. Global Youth Service Day: Phillip reported that Group for the East End will facilitate an educational initiative on groundwater at Greenport, Southold and Mattituck middle schools. The Youth Advisory Council will work in conjunction with the Tree Committee to celebrate "Arbor Day" to be coordinated by Councilwoman Doherty. Job and Internship Fair: Invitations have been delivered to several local businesses; a mass mailing will go out the third week of March. Bike Swap Update: Officer Brewer and Country Cycle have confirmed that they will provide safety training-event scheduled for May 17th from 10:00 a.m. until noon at Recreation Center. SADD Youth Forum: Jillian reported that the event was a success with students expressing greatest concern about drug, alcohol and tobacco use among teens as well as the lack of things to do in Town. A report will be generated with details. Request for Fundraising Event: Phillip received email from parent in Southold requesting support of Youth Bureau to host fund raising event (prom fashion show) to support "community center." As the Town is prohibited from direct fund raising, he will suggest that she reach out to SADD clubs. Open Gym Night: The following details were discussed: A tentative date was set but has been changed to Sunday, April 27th from noon until 3 p.m. Place-Greenport High School gymnasium Targeted for 6th 7th and 8th grades. Students are required to sign up with Andrea Nydegger, Jessica Santiago or Elaine White and Jillian The Town will provide a grill, hot dogs, snacks and drinks i Games and activities: basketball, badminton, volleyball, Four Square, scooter rides and more to be determined Jillian will ask Angela Manfredi to assist with activities Crissy Witzke will be asked to develop a flyer and initiate Facebook posting Phillip will ask Youth Advisory Council members to volunteer to serve as chaperones Fostering Intergenerational Opportunities: In absence of Karen, Phillip reported that Southold elementary school teacher Lucille Jones forwarded email of photos of students and seniors very engaged in teaching and learning tablets.
