Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes
February 10, 2014
YB Present: Jacob Branker, Andrea Nydegger, Karen McLaughlin, Cristina
Witzke, Jeff Standish, Elaine White, Sarah Benjamin, Jillian Ruroede,
Councilman Jim Dinizio, Councilman Bill Ruland and Phillip Beltz. Excused:
Officer Bill Brewer, Robert Duffin and Irene Tsontakis-Bradley.
Approval of Minutes The minutes of January 13, 2014 were approved.
Youth Advisory Council Membership: Greenport needs additional students,
Jillian will speak with current members to assess their commitment or recruit
additional members. There will be no YAC meeting in March as YAC will
participate in preparing and delivering meal for homeless for John's Place.
Suffolk County Anti-Bullying Initiative: The Suffolk County Youth Bureau has
launched an anti-bullying initiative sponsored by County Executive Bellone.
Elaine White reported that 6th grade students are also welcome to participate.
Global Youth Service Day: Phillip reported that a subcommittee is working with
schools to develop an educational initiative on the environment for middle school
students that will include the Group for the East End. In addition, the Youth
Advisory Council will develop an Earth Day community service project.
Suffolk County Youth Needs Assessment: Phillip reported that Southampton,
Riverhead and Southold Youth Bureau directors met with the Suffolk County
Youth Bureau director to discuss the unique aspects of the East End and its
impact on youth (lack of public transportation, second homeownership, elderly,
etc.) The County has requested that the Youth Bureaus develop a regional needs
assessment.
Suffolk County Legislative District #1: The SC Youth Bureau director has
requested that someone from the North Fork community serve on the SC Youth
Bureau board representing SC Legislative district #1. If anyone knows of
someone, email Phillip. He will contact Legislator Krupski's office to inform them.
Job and Internship Fair: A solicitation letter from the Supervisor regarding the
event with a Registration Form was distributed for all to target local businesses for
participation (April 19th 9 a.m. - noon at Recreation Center.)
Bike Swap Update: The date is scheduled for Saturday, May 17th from 10 a.m.
until noon at the Recreation Center. Phillip will forward flyers by email when the
event is near. Officer Brewer and Greg Williams will teach safety.

SADD Youth Forum: Andrea stated that the forum has identified student leaders
and adults in the community to attend the "Tolerance and Acceptance" forum on
March 7th. The Youth Bureau will support the forum with a $250 contribution.
Open Gym Night: At the last YAC meeting, students suggested that recreation
night be held for middle school students and some high school students could
chaperone. Jeff suggested hosting the event at Greenport high school, all in
agreement. Jillian will facilitate. Details for planning this event will be further
discussed at the next meeting.
Fostering Intergenerational Opportunities: Karen reported that the Human
Resource Center received 17 computer tablets from Suffolk County and that fifth
and sixth grade students from Southold Elementary school will work with seniors
to teach operations and applications.
Next Meeting Date and Time: March 10, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. at the Peconic Lane
Community Center (next to Recreation Center.)
