HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013 z jjIZ da, TOWN OF SOUTHOLD YOUTH BUREAU BOARD 2013 Accomplishments • Printing and dissemination of Resource Directory that included participation of business community in underwriting some costs. • Completed development and dissemination of surveys completed by high school students to determine what activities students would like the Youth Bureau to implement. • With Economic Development Committee, hosted Youth Job Fair, six businesses participated with approximately 40 positions for summer employment. Fifty youth attended the event. • Sponsored Community Service Day forum in April with thirty non- profit organizations participating to solicit volunteers. Approximately 40 residents attended the event. • Attempted to work with schools to develop environmental and recycling initiatives for implementation beginning America Recycles Day (November 15, 2013.) Students in Mattituck high school developed public service announcements that aired the same week. • Worked with schools to share fields to maximize recreational opportunities for youth and adults. • Provided financial support to North Fork Alliance towards hosting outdoor movie nights for middle and high school students, approximate attendance 120. • Participated in SC Summer Works program providing employment to three students (Human Resource Center and Dept. of Public Works.) • Collaborated with Hamptons Collegiate Baseball All Star Game to sponsor "Southold Youth Bureau Night" on July 13th with approximate attendance of 120. • Developed social media policy that was approved by the Town Board. • With regional youth service providers, developed East End Youth Leadership Summit and Building Safe Communities Prevention Strategies" conference. • Youth Advisory Council members performed the following community service activities: cooking and feeding homeless at Mattituck Presbyterian Church (John's Place), Adopt a Platoon writing campaign for soldiers in Afghanistan, made holiday cards and baked cookies for residents at San Simeon by the Sound, provided refreshments for All Star Baseball game. 2014 Goals and Objectives 2014 • Sponsor "Open Gym Night" for youth at recreation center in winter. • Partner with Suffolk County and healthcare provider to offer behavioral health services for youth. • In partnership with the Group for the East End, develop environmental initiative for high school students to recognize Earth Day in April. • Promote intergenerational opportunities through students assisting seniors with Nexus tablets from SC Office for Aging. • Sponsor educational forum (e.g. electronic cigarettes, etc.) • Host Community Service Day event. • Co-sponsor (with Economic Development Committee) Youth Job/Internship Fair on April 19th
