OFFICE OF THE SUPERVISOR
TOWN OF SOUTHOLD
Economic Development Committee (EDC) Meeting Minutes
January 23, 2014
Present: Donielle Cardinale, Rona Smith, Amy Maguire Burns, Tony
Cocheo, Linton Duell, Carolyn Fahey, Councilman Bill Ruland and Phillip
Beltz. Also present- Heather Lanza, Planning Director. Excused: Steve
Latham, Ian Wile, John Stype and Supervisor Scott Russell. Meeting
began at 3.05 p.m.
Farmers' Market Request: Linton met with Gene and Maryann Krupski
and others to assist them with the development of their farmers market
concept. He reported that the proposed site for the market is the Mattituck
Florist on Love Lane that is next to municipal parking. Maryann Krupski left
written materials with details of the proposed market, including proposed
vendors. Phillip will have these materials scanned and sent to EDC. Bill
stated that the Agricultural Advisory Committee did not meet (postponed
due to snow) and will meet on February 5t" to discuss the concept. This
request is tentatively supported by the EDC and suggestion for several
members of the proposed market consortium to meet with EDC to answer
additional questions. Prior to allowing operation, need to ascertain from
Building dept. if the use of this site is permitted by Town code and if not,
how it can fulfill Town code requirements. With tentative support of EDC,
possibly allow market concept to launch as a "pilot" in 2014 to evaluate
what works, what does not work, etc. before allowing in 2015.
Revisiting Schools with SC Commercial and Industrial Incentive
Program: Heather and Carolyn reported that schools have been notified to
opt in or out of the SC plan that was recently adopted. There appears to be
a lack of understanding that this is the same information that was shared
with them in the past. Heather has developed maps that define areas that
new and/or existing businesses could apply for tax abatements. Both will
contact school boards and will meet with them to discuss.
2014 North Fork Business Directory Ad: Phillip provided proposed ad
copy and all approved its submission for 2014.
Internship and Job Fair: Confirmed for April 19, 2014 from 9 a.m. until
noon at the Recreation Center. Phillip requested that EDC members
consider contacting businesses individually to have them participate.
NYS Regional Economic Council North Fork Grant Awards: Carolyn
stated that a Consolidated Funding Application will be available in March
and the Council seeks projects that provide a major economic impact.
Review of 2013 Accomplishments: Distributed.
Development of Goals and Objectives 2014: Phillip provided the
following tentative goals for 2014:
• Market SC Commercial Industrial Incentive program
• Sponsor Job/Internship Fair with Youth Bureau
• With North Fork Promotion Council, sponsor event celebrating the
Town's 375 anniversary in 2015
• Continue with "listening tours"
• Host document shredding opportunity for small businesses
• Assist businesses on Fishers Island with access to mainland
resources (e.g. Dept. of Motor Vehicles, SC Dept. of Health, etc.) John
Stype will assist working with Legislator Albert Krupski, Jr.
In addition, below are additional suggested goals:
• Sponsor educational forum highlighting the concept of "working from
home-entrepreneurship opportunities"
• With Southold Transportation Commission, host discussion with
business community to understand the viability of having bus shelters in
hamlet business centers to enable success of businesses
Next Meeting Date/Time: To be determined. Meeting ended at 4:20 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Phillip Beltz
