HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/13/2014 {~4~ llFFOIx~®F 4o a~ Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes January 13, 2014 YB Present: Karen McLaughlin, Cristina Witzke, Jeff Standish, Elaine White, Robert Duffin, Sarah Benjamin, Jillian Ruroede, , Officer Bill Brewer, Councilman Jim Dinizio, Councilman Bill Ruland and Phillip Beltz. Also present: Amy Maguire Burns. Excused/Absent: Jacob Branker, Andrea Nydegger and Irene Tsontakis- Bradley. Approval of Minutes of November 18, 2013 Costa Kokkinos Resignation: Costa's busy schedule and relocation to Brooklyn necessitated his resignation. Youth Advisory Council Membership/Recent Activities: Phillip reported that there are currently 22 members in the YAC, participation varies as many students are very busy with other competing activities (sports, etc.) and some no longer attend any activities however he will keep membership "fluid" to allow students to come and go as their schedules and/or interests allow. Suffolk County Anti-Bullying Initiative: The Suffolk County Youth Bureau will unveil an anti-bullying initiative with County Executive Bellone. Governor Cuomo's State of the State Address: The following are proposed for 2014: Anti-Texting law to suspend driver's license of anyone age 21 or less who is ticketed for texting while driving Expansion of YouthWorks program to provide tax incentives to businesses that hire young employees Job and Internship Fair: Scheduled for April 19th 9 a.m. - noon at Recreation Center, this was presented to the North Fork Business Advisory Committee who will reach out to the business community. Elaine suggested notifying local rotaries. Jeff stated that the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball would also participate with sponsoring All Star Youth Bureau night. Kids Count Data Book 2013 www.ccf.ny.gov Bike Swap Initiative: Amy Maguire Burns proposed that the Youth Bureau support an initiative enabling households to donate and/or trade bikes in good working condition as frequently children outgrow bikes, etc. The board was in agreement to hold the event at the Recreation Center in May for the morning. Some details need to be worked out such as liability, etc. This would also be a i good venue to teach bike safety. Officer Brewer volunteered to provide training. Greg Williams would also be a good teacher. Possibly have bike stores sponsor the swap and fix up bikes. Review of 2013 Youth Bureau Accomplishments and Development of 2014 Goals and Objectives: Additional proposed objectives included: . Hampton Collegiate All Star Youth Bureau Night . Community service activity for YAC to tutor students - Elaine will discuss with YAC at their meeting. Next Meeting Date and Time: February 10, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. Respectfully Submitted, Phillip Beltz z
