HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/08/2014 F. `GOWN OF SOUTHOLD HOUSING ADVISORY COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES r x*.4 t MEETING #90 January 08, 2014 Present: Rona Smith, LeRoy Heyliger, Beth Motschenbacher, Michael Herbert, Jeanne Kelley, Eric Dantes, Frederick Andrews, William Dougherty and Phillip Beltz. Excused/Absent: John Vahey and Dan Sarnowski. Meeting began at 5:35 p.m. Approval of Minutes: The minutes of December 11th were approved. Town Board Liaison: A replacement for Councilman Talbot will be identified, most likely by March when the Town Board reviews committee assignments. Habitat for Humanity Update The title has cleared and a closing will occur in the near future. Potential applicants have until January 31't to submit Town applications for consideration providing they meet residency and income requirements. A meeting to enlist volunteers will occur in winter. Housing Options for Seniors Surveys: Approximately 50 surveys were received by seniors. The primary topics of interest are as follows (in order of interest): Elder Law, Companion Care, Rental Housing and Homeownership, Property Maintenance and Elder Care. Fishers Island Affordable Apartments: Architect, Bruce Kinlin, met with the Town Board to discuss a proposed conversion to affordable apartments that received tentative support. The Supervisor requested that HAC be apprised as project develops. Proposal to Change Town Code for Affordable Apartments: Eric Dantes stated the Zoning Board of Appeals will further discuss regulations at their January 26th meeting. Development of 2014 Goals and Objectives: Review and discussion, additional suggestions: further articulate who affordable housing serves (e.g. middle class) and how best to "clone Founders Village." Fred also suggested that HAC meet with Town Board to discuss the difficulties that it faces in fulfilling its mission. Newsday Editorial Huntington Affordable Apartments: Discussion of the difficulty for elected officials to develop affordable housing, the perceptions of the public regarding "affordable" that often excludes middle class in need of affordable housing, etc. Meeting Ended 6:40 p.m. - Next Meeting Date: February 12th @ 5:30 p.m. @ Town Hall meeting room.
