Erase racism sub-committee meeting: Carolyn Peabody summarized that we are
requesting a first level training for town leaders, to sensitize town leaders and
gain their commitment to diversity. We would raise funds to pay
for the training. Carolyn spoke with Erase Racism about offering a one-day
training out here. We need a space, such as Peconic landing, to hold forty
people. Two leaders from ER would be needed. ER will get back to Carolyn
about cost. We will generate a list of leaders to be invited. We would then contact
leaders and find out when they could do it. Then raise funds for possible fall
program. Our next task is to decide who to invite: how many from town, Chamber
of Commerce, etc., along with planning for fundraising. We would then turn over
our fundraising plan to a lawyer, to make sure our plan conforms with town
requirements. Meeting is scheduled for Monday, Dec 9 at Mike's @10am.
MLK committee reported that event could be at Mattituck Pres. Church form to be
filled out, Eleanor and Jean to follow up with church. Speaker will be invited by
Eleanor. One speaker only. Program sent in by Merle, with copies distributed.
Program to follow last year's format. Cindy to invite new priest from Greenport
Episcopal to offer invocation, also invite a child from Cast to read the "I have a
Dream" speech excerpt, possibly more than one child. Susan will invite Rev.
Peter Kelley for invocation, if needed. Other features of program were reviewed.
New rabbi from Greenport synagogue will be invited to offer benediction.
Discussion about possibly having schoolchildren volunteer as ushers, so young
people have chance to do community service.
Schools:
Southold-- Jean and Mike met with superintendent but bullying not addressed so
they will meet with Board of Education to follow up.
Mattituck--screening of movie BULLY. Leroy suggests sending a letter to school
to acknowledge their taking this action, hoping other schools would follow suit.
Since Mattituck initiated, would be good to encourage other schools to screen it
as well. Susan will draft a letter to acknowledge Mattituck schools for taking this
initiative. Leroy introduced idea of our becoming approved as viable organization
by schools so volunteers can be recognized for working with us, possibly two or
three to help with MLK. Susan will draft letter to schools to get us on the list of
recognized
Greenport-- Importance of following up on previous conversations with principal
about bias related incidents.
Police--no report
New business:
Marjorie Day introduced the idea of holding an open mic, which she heard about
in poetry reading by Poets of Well-Being. Susan Dingle, a member of the group,
provided definition of an open mic and background on spoken word poetry.
Carolyn knows poet in city who might be a good emcee for such an event,
Howard Treadwell. Also Val Shelby may know someone. This is identified as a
fundraising possibility for the Erase Racism sub-committee, with a tie-in to the
movie Bully, and the idea of "Standing with The Silent," as young people learn to
stand up for peers being bullied.
Motion to adjourn.
Minutes respectfully submitted by Susan Dingle
