OFFICE OF THE SUPERVISOR
TOWN OF SOUTHOLD
Economic Development Committee (EDC) Meeting Minutes
November 20, 2013
Present: Rona Smith, Amy Maguire Burns, Carolyn Fahey, Donielle
Cardinale, John Stype, Ian Wile, Tony Cocheo, Steve Latham, Councilman
Bill Ruland and Phillip Beltz. Excused: Linton Duell and Supervisor Scott
Russell. Meeting began at 2.35 p.m.
New Farming Initiatives and Proposed Farmers Market: Maryann and
Gene Krupski spoke of new farming initiatives that require less land and
impediments that small farming operations face in competing with
established local markets. They specifically suggested EDC support in
promoting farmers markets, similar to Greenport. One was established in
Mattituck at the florist on Love Lane during the Taste North Fork weekend
that was very successful. The current code is silent on farmer market
operations, ergo, they are not permitted. This is a preliminary discussion
and will require additional research and discussion-agreed that EDC will
further discuss at their December meeting and later meet with the Krupskis
in January. Bill will speak with the Town's Agricultural Advisory Committee
to assess their thoughts. Maryann and Gene will identify prospective space,
day and time of market operations, vendors, manager and proposed criteria
to participate in farmers' market.
Request of Transportation Commission: Tabled.
Taste North Fork Wrap Up: The event was very successful and the North
Fork Promotion Council will duplicate next year. Some businesses learned
to work together as a team to foster benefits for everyone. While the EDC
did provide support to this initiative, it is not within their purview to measure
its success but rather EETA and LIWC should assess outcomes as written
in their grant application. Ian volunteered to write an abstract of
observations of the event, he will forward to EDC who will respond with
comments.
Development of Internship and Job Fair: The Youth Bureau and
Economic Development Committee will sponsor an Internship and Job Fair
on April 19, 2014 from 9 a.m. until noon at the Recreation Center. Phillip
will meet with School Business Advisory Council member (Martha Tuthill,
Greenport High School) who volunteered to assist with its development. He
will inquire whether Suffolk County Office of Community Development
would consider funding this initiative.
Affordable Healthcare Act: Amy requested that a meeting regarding the
Affordable Healthcare Act from the NYS Small Business Development
Center at Stony Brook University be noticed on the EDC website. All in
agreement.
Welcome Letter New Businesses: Amy and Rona developed a letter
welcoming new businesses that was distributed. EDC asked to review and
provide Amy with comments.
Economic Development Email Distribution List: Phillip reported that he
created an email distribution list from attendees of previous public meetings
who will be notified of future events.
Next Meeting Date/Time: To be determined. The meeting ended at 3:50
p. M.
Goals and Objectives 2014: At the next meeting EDC will review 2013
goals and develop goals and objectives for 2014.
Respectfully submitted,
Phillip Beltz
