Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes
October 21, 2013
YB Present: Jacob Branker, Robert Duffin, Sarah Benjamin, Karen McLaughlin,
Andrea Nydegger, Councilman Bill Ruland and Phillip Beltz. Excused/Absent:
Jillian Ruroede, Councilman Jim Dinizio, Costa Kokkinos, Jeff Standish, Elaine
White, Cristina Witzke, Irene Tsontakis-Bradley and Officer Bill Brewer,
Approval of Minutes of September 23, 2013
Greetings from Costa: Phillip shared photos of Costa's baby girl. Due to school
commitments and new baby, he will not be able to attend the meeting. Because of
the high absenteeism, discussion of Youth Bureau membership composition,
possibility of soliciting additional members if anyone expresses interest. Will hold
as it is aberrant for so many members to be absent.
Southold Youth Bureau Social Media Recommendations: Phillip provided
board with revised proposed consent form letter to parents/guardians. All in favor.
America Recycles Day (November 15): Schools will work in concert with
Christian Montgomery, Mattituck senior, to develop educational forum for middle
and high school students. Phillip will contact the Group for the East End to assist
efforts.
Review of Youth Advisory Council (YAC) Membership: Jillian will recruit
additional students from Greenport.
Workshop on Electronic Cigarettes: Phillip is awaiting return call from the
Prevention Resource Center of Suffolk County to discuss possibility of hosting
workshop.
Update on Goals and Objectives 2013: Karen reported that she is awaiting the
signed contract from Suffolk County that will provide 17 Nexus tablets to be
utilized by seniors. She will reach out to Mattituck High School Community
Service director to find students to serve as "instructors."
Development of Internships: The student activity survey presented clear
message that this should be a priority. In addition, the North Fork Business
Advisory Committee strongly supports the development of a formal internship
program (Youth Bureau and Economic Development Committee.) This would
include soliciting support from hospitals, banks, local businesses to attend a
meeting to develop formal internship program that would be flexible to student
schedules.
i
YAC Community Service Activities: Students identified the following for
upcoming months: leaf raking for seniors, "Adopt a Platoon" letter writing to
soldiers in Afghanistan and making holiday cards and baking cookies for residents
of San Simeon.
Future YAC Activity: At last month's meetings, YAC suggested development of
Open Gym Night with Food during the winter.
Conference Information: Brochures distributed.
Other: Sarah requested that she be placed on next month's agenda to discuss
new CAST initiative for pre-school children.
Next Meeting Date: Monday, November 18, 20013 at 5:00 p.m. at the Human
Resource Center.
Respectfully Submitted,
Phillip Beltz
