SOUTHOLD TOWN ANTI BIAS TASK FORCE MINUTES/ JULY 15, 2013
PRESENT: Carolyn Peabody, Jean LePre, Valerie Shelby, Marjorie Day, Peter Bell,
Michael Domino, Cindy Smith, and LeRoy Heyliger and Merle Levine.

There are corrections to last months minutes; Valerie has been present at both the May
and June meetings and Mike waspresent at the June meeting.
A suggestion is made by Marjorie that she would like the minutes to reflect a clarification
re: monitoring the truck to state the ABTF will be monitoring the freezer truck. Carolyn 'i
makes a motion to accept the minutes as corrected, seconded by Marjorie. All are in
favor.
OLD BUSINESS: Erase Racism-plan is to invite them to come to us to doa two day
training (Undoing RACISM I). The training will be for community leaders, schools and
government workers. We need to find the funds to do this-then public outreach and
survey (including perception of people as targets).
Mike reports that the town attorney states that we can raise money and can accept money
toward a goal of training. The ABTF would like that statement in writing. How would
that money be allocated for the ABTF to use it.
Bullying- Merle brought in an article that Bridgehampton is doing a mural to support the
Dignity ActlAnti Bullying Laws.
Susan has written a draft letter (submitted by LeRoy). The ABTF membership makes
corrections. The letter will go to town to be sent. Follow up will be made by school
representatives.
There is an article about a teen squad (Harlem Program) tht makes suggestions for teens !
re: bullying.
PICNIC:
Mike will do a follow up letter to Tim Kelly to save the date (bag pipe).
Fire Dept- LeRoy spoke to EMS to secure a person for the event. He will follow up with i
Jason.
Membership discusses the jump house slip and slide ideas. A decision is made to secure
the jump house oniy.(supervised)
New donations have been solicited y Valerie..
Food and Supplies- some replenishment is needed. Mike has last years in storage and
will get a count.
Picnic sub committee will meet July 22, 2013 at Mikes Deli. ~
SCHOOL REPORTS:
No new reports.
POLICE REPORTS;
An incident was reported by Chief Flatley (Cindy and Carolyn). A stenciled "NO
NIGGERS" was painted on a sign in a beach community in Southold. Apparently kids
were chased down the night before. The town police took pictures and removed the
graffiti. Officer Brewer states the investigation is ongoing and no suspects have been
found to date. The Suffolk Hate Crimes Unit has been notified.
NEW BUSINESS: The Human Rights Commission has connected with The "Hate
Crimes Unit. There has been a new decision re: the definition of a Hate Crime. There is
anew category. Hate incident has been created to help document patterns. Carolyn
makes a motion that the ABTF write a letter to police asking if they use the hate incident
or would they like the Suffolk Co Hate Crimes Unit to come and help them to
implement? Peter seconds the motion. Mike would like to include thanking them for
their input in the letter. All are in favor.
Trevon Martin incidenUverdict : ABTF is concerned with profiling and its affects on a 1
community. Let us be proactive and not reactive. Discussion will continue next meeting.
There is a motion to adjourn made by Carolyn, seconded by LeRoy at 11:15. All are in
favor.
