Economic Development Committee (EDC) Meeting Minutes
July 12, 2013
Present: Rona Smith, Amy Maguire Burns, Linton Duell, Ian Wile, John Stype, Donielle
Cardinale, Steve Latham, Councilman Bill Ruland, Supervisor Scott Russell and Phillip Beltz.
Excused: Tony Cocheo. Meeting began at 2:05 p.m.
Report of Southold Business Forum: Approximately 20 attendees for the event, too many
unknown factors with the Affordable Care Act to provide accurate information. EDC will
continue to host additional resource and information meetings.
Support of East End Tourism Alliance (EFTA) Grant: Several suggestions for supporting
hamlet businesses with the EFTA grant including: gallery walks, antique walks, historical society
walks, wine and dine walks, etc. Joan Bischoff, North Fork Promotion Council president will be
invited to the next meeting to brainstorm ideas with EDC. He also may have more information
regarding the dates for implementation (originally scheduled as late November or possibly early
December.)
Business Improvement Districts: Carolyn Fahey provided an overview of BIDS and the
necessary components to make them successful. With the exception of Greenport Village that
has a BID, did not appear relevant to other hamlet business centers.
Public Hearing for Proposed SC Industrial/Commercial Incentive Plan: Heather Lanza,
planning director and Amy Burns spoke at the SC legislature in favor of the plan. Rona and
Phillip will speak before the Economic Development Committee on July 24th.
Additional Goals and Objectives: Amy, John and Phillip met to discuss Business Liaison
position; they propose the following additional objectives for 2014. Develop a formal internship
program that would include a diverse group of employers (FEIN, Peconic Landing, Mullen
Motors, Town of Southold, Restaurants, Social Media, etc.) as well as sponsor an additional job
fair in January for returning college students.
Leakage Analysis: Rona reported synthesized findings of the Economic Chapter "Leakage
Analysis" that could be useful data for retail expansion of existing businesses.
EDC Welcoming Committee Report: Meeting with prospective businessman seeking to
convert an existing resort complex and meeting with Peconic Productions.
Next Meeting Date/Time: Friday, August 9`h at 2:00 p.m. at the Annex.
The meeting ended at 3:20 p.m.
