Parks, Beaches and Recreation Committee
MINUTES June 11,2013 Meeting
6:30 P.M. in the Town Hall Meeting Hall
Present were: Chairman, Vinny Orlando and Members: John Betsch, Arthur Leudesdorf, Nick
Deegan, Nancy Foote Guests: Joe Frohnhoefer, Lyndsey Barker, Mark Terry, Alan Kraus
Call to order: Chairman Vinny Orlando called the meeting to order at 6:30 P.M. Below are
discussion items:
Life Jacket Loaner Stations - Joe Fronhoefer, representative for Sea Tow made a presentation on
their Life Jacket Loaner program. Currently the program is used at private marinas but Joe would like
to see it expanded to Town properties, Gull Pond and Pine Neck Boat ramps. A station would be
installed at each property and stocked with 8 life jackets for boaters to borrow. The cost of the project
is funded by a Coast Guard grant and donations from Clare Rose, Anheuser Bush and Sea Tow.
There would be no cost to the Town and a representative from Sea Tow would monitor the two
stations. Vinny and Joe will go before the Town Board to seek their approval for the project.
Goldsmith Inlet Siqnaqe - Mark Terry and Alan Kraus presented a signage project for Goldsmith
Inlet Watershed Watch. A volunteer committee with representatives from the Goldsmith community,
Group to Save Goldsmiths Inlet and other relevant organizations would like to install a sign in the
Goldsmith's parking lot area. The sign would project awareness about the Inlet and its unique
environmental qualities and to acknowledge the EPF grant that funds the Inlet study. It would also
serve as a guide for area residents and recreational users. The project would cost $7,000 with some
or all the money coming from the EPF grant and other funding. John Betsch thought the project could
also be an opportunity to use as a pilot for future signage programs to include all Town beaches and
properties to give it more credibility. The pilot sign could be standardized for adaption across all
Town Properties. Art Leudesdorf encouraged the development of a budget, timeline and task list.
Vinny and Mark will seek Town Board approval to further explore this project and ask for $2,500 to
pay for the first step in the process for graphic and architectural design.
Monofilament Containers - A letter previously submitted to the committee was read and discussed.
John Betsch, representing the Kennys/McCabe's Beach Association had written the letter concerning
monofilament containers at these two beaches. The containers were originally installed by the Boy
scouts five years ago but have become an eyesore. They attract rodents, birds and other animals.
John has requested that these containers be removed. Vinny will talk to Jeff Standish about the
possibility of having this done.
Other Business - Nick Deegan wanted to know about the lease agreement between the Town of
Southold and the Schoolhouse playground for field use. It is an old agreement that the committee did
not have the information for. This item will be looked into and the information will be passed on to
Nick.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:25 PM. The next committee meeting was not scheduled at this time.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Foote
Committee Secretary
