RE: Fishers Island Harbor Committee Meeting May 24, 2013
Recap of meeting votes and discussion:
I first want to thank Louisa for her update on membership re-ups and current Bay
Patrol signups to date. I miss her at these meeting, but I realize that our schedule does not
always fit everyone's schedule.
The committee discussed at some length the lack of a pumpout boat operator.
While we all realize that part of the problem in attracting a qualified person is based on
the required skills needed, a second and almost more important consideration is the low
hourly rate being offered.
We went on to consider the possibility of leaving the pumpout boat in CT and
hiring a CT person to come over and service the harbors. A second thought was to ask a
CT pumpout service to come over to the Island on some kind of schedule and use our
boat or their own, but use our pumpout services currently contracted for at the Noank
Shipyard for waste removal.
The Island feels strongly that our summer residents, our key taxpayers, need and
want to have clean water maintained during the summer months for bathing and all water
related activities in our harbors and adjoining waters. As you know, most of the waste
gathered comes from transient boats.
On another subject, the Harbor Committee voted to add another full-time Bay
Patrol member to the summer's team. His name is Alex Williams and he will need the
appropriate paperwork sent to him so he can get started. His address is PO Box 278,
Fishers Island, N.Y. 06390. He has his own boat and docking location. All Bay Patrol
members need hats and shirts, size extra-large, please. This will fill out the agreement we
have concerning two full-time Bay Patrol members and one part-time member. I have
several signs for display on their boats when they are out and about.
On the subject of re-ups to the Harbor Committee, we have agreement from Mike
Posey for a new term on the Harbor Committee. We are still waiting for Margie Purnell
who represents Hay Harbor.
On another matter, we have received applications from 49 mooring holders who
have filled out our two page form and submitted their stipend for the summer season. To
date we have collected $5,935. We have added two new moorings holders to the harbor
layout and, with a new fleet of J70's coming in this summer, we will move the harbor to a
near full layout.
West Harbor now has 5 different sailing classes of boats along with a mix of
personal boats. All add to the busy summer activities here on Fishers along with the
normal group of transients. As an aside, all new or replacement moorings are being
upgraded to Helix style moorings.
Our two NYS licensed Safe Boating instructors will teach two courses this
summer for the Safe Boating course required by the State of NY for those between the
ages of 12 and 18 who want to operate a boat without supervision. This is a big seller for
the summer kids. After all, what young person doesn't want to drive the family outboard?
We have grown-ups who could also use this course.
Thanks for your attention to our needs.
