PRESENT: Peter Bell, Nydia Portillo, Loretta Hatzel-Geraci, Merle Levine, Mike
Domino, Eleanor Lingo, Carolyn Peabody
GUESTS: Father Ron Richardson (LI Council of Churches), Leroy I-Iighlinger and
Susan Dingle
OLD BUSINESS:
Loretta has asked the town if they could make labels-they will work on it.
SCHOOLS
Crreenport - Cindy went to Bd meeting. ABTF member Merle asks if schools are
discussing ways to help teachers instead of relying on tests to be their guides. NY got a
waiver- What does that mean?
Southold-Eleanor and Mike met with Supt. for the poster contest and it was well
received. They drafted a letter to all schools for May 22 contest. There will be a first and
second prize to each school ($50 and $25 respectively). A town resolution will also be
done and the money will come from the Frank LePre Memorial Fund.
There is a discussion to talk to the newspaper to have an article addressing bullying.
Mattituck- Carolyn Spoke with Jim McKenna. A diversity committee meeting will be
recalled.
A discussion which includes a report of bullying is begun with grandparent Leroy
present. He states his grandson (13 yr) is being bullied at Mattituck School. He has been
called Nigger and woos. The student finally got fed up and hit another student and was
suspended for 3 days. Perpetrator may not have gotten consequences. Other issues come
up as a result of discussion which include that when a child reports an incident there is
the underlying fear of"being a snitch". There are concerns about children excluding
others in discriminatory ways on the playground/recess; Hispanic children are being
called "beanies", student displaying his father's white supremacy ideas, poor, autistic are
isolated. Can there be more of a focus for ABTF which educates schools, parents and
churches?
The Anti Bias Task Force wants to 1. Talk with the school Supt (Carolyn and Mike). Re:
the issue(s). 2. Write a letter to the Supt that we have received a report of excessive
bullying. The school must identify and monitor. (include cyber bullying). Is there a form
in school to report bullying?
POLICE:
Mike and Joy wilt write the letter commending a new police officer for his actions.
PICNIC
Picnic will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2013.
There is a motion to adjourn made by Merle at 11:20, seconded by Cindy. All are in
favor.
