OFFICE OF THE SUPERVISOR
TOWN OF SOUTHOLD
Economic Development Committee (EDC) Meeting Minutes
April 26, 2013
Present: lan Wile, Rona Smith, John Stype, Donielle Cardinale, Steve Latham, Tony
Cocheo, Linton Duell, Amy Maguire Burns and Phillip Beltz. Excused: Carolyn Fahey,
Councilman Bill Ruland and Supervisor Scott Russell. Meeting began at 10:05 a.m.
Discussion of March 28th Meeting: North Fork Promotion Council (NFPC) President,
Joan Bischoff, and several Southold Business Alliance (SBA) officers attended the
March 28th meeting to learn of EDC 2012 accomplishments and 2013 goals and
objectives. It was disappointing that neither Chambers of Commerce attended. Joan
informed the EDC of the recently awarded grant to East End Tourism Alliance (EETA) in
the amount of $340,000 from the NYS Long Island Regional Economic Council to
promote tourism on the East End in "shoulder seasons." There will be a meeting to
discuss details of the grant on April 4th and all are welcome to attend.
EDC Efforts to Support EETA Grant: Suggestion to invite EETA to the next EDC
meeting to discuss grant and ways EDC can support their efforts.
Business Liaison Status: Amy Maguire Burns was appointed by the Town Board as
Business Liaison. Phillip and John will meet with her to discuss follow-up initiatives.
Youth Job Fair: Phillip reported that the event was a success, 51 students attended
with six employers who represented over 25 summer job positions. Phillip recognized
the efforts of Jackie Baker of the SBA.
Invitation to Island Group Administration: In absence of Supervisor Russell, Phillip
reported that Island Group has developed a program (not insurance) that offers small
businesses the ability to offer employees access to the Island Group network, a "self-
pay as you go" for benefits such as doctor visits, hospitalization, dental, etc. that
employers can avail of for their employees. Scott suggested that EDC offer education
forum for local small businesses featuring Island Group Administration.
Supervisor State of Town Business Meeting: Phillip suggested utilizing this meeting
as an opportunity to host multiple events to bring the business community together at a
"Southold Business Forum." In addition to the Supervisor's address, various
educational programs could be offered (including Island Group Admin.) John suggested
information on the Affordable Health Care Act (aka ObamaCare.) Other suggestions
include Carolyn Fahey update on Suffolk County Industrial and Commercial Incentive
program and other County initiatives, lan could provide a workshop on Kickstarter.com.
All in favor to proceed with forum and offer in mid-June and have at the Peconic Lane
Community Center with stage and break-out rooms. EDC should think of additional
topics/programs of interest to the local business community. To be further discussed at
the next meeting.
Review of Implementation of Goals and Objectives: lan will spearhead objective
utilizing social media, Rona and Steve will create "fact sheet" for of leakage analysis.
All in agreement that EDC should continue "Listening Tours" with emphasis on
hospitality and agriculture industries as well as focus on "Shop Local" campaign.
Next Meeting Date/Time: To be determined.
The meeting ended at 11:20a.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Phillip Beltz
