Box 1179 Southold, New York 11971-0959 Fax (631) 765-1823 Telephone (631) 765-1889 OFFICE OF THE SUPERVISOR TOWN OF SOUTHOLD Economic Development Committee (EDC) Meeting Minutes April 26, 2013 Present: lan Wile, Rona Smith, John Stype, Donielle Cardinale, Steve Latham, Tony Cocheo, Linton Duell, Amy Maguire Burns and Phillip Beltz. Excused: Carolyn Fahey, Councilman Bill Ruland and Supervisor Scott Russell. Meeting began at 10:05 a.m. Discussion of March 28th Meeting: North Fork Promotion Council (NFPC) President, Joan Bischoff, and several Southold Business Alliance (SBA) officers attended the March 28th meeting to learn of EDC 2012 accomplishments and 2013 goals and objectives. It was disappointing that neither Chambers of Commerce attended. Joan informed the EDC of the recently awarded grant to East End Tourism Alliance (EETA) in the amount of $340,000 from the NYS Long Island Regional Economic Council to promote tourism on the East End in "shoulder seasons." There will be a meeting to discuss details of the grant on April 4th and all are welcome to attend. EDC Efforts to Support EETA Grant: Suggestion to invite EETA to the next EDC meeting to discuss grant and ways EDC can support their efforts. Business Liaison Status: Amy Maguire Burns was appointed by the Town Board as Business Liaison. Phillip and John will meet with her to discuss follow-up initiatives. Youth Job Fair: Phillip reported that the event was a success, 51 students attended with six employers who represented over 25 summer job positions. Phillip recognized the efforts of Jackie Baker of the SBA. Invitation to Island Group Administration: In absence of Supervisor Russell, Phillip reported that Island Group has developed a program (not insurance) that offers small businesses the ability to offer employees access to the Island Group network, a "self- pay as you go" for benefits such as doctor visits, hospitalization, dental, etc. that employers can avail of for their employees. Scott suggested that EDC offer education forum for local small businesses featuring Island Group Administration. Supervisor State of Town Business Meeting: Phillip suggested utilizing this meeting as an opportunity to host multiple events to bring the business community together at a "Southold Business Forum." In addition to the Supervisor's address, various educational programs could be offered (including Island Group Admin.) John suggested information on the Affordable Health Care Act (aka ObamaCare.) Other suggestions include Carolyn Fahey update on Suffolk County Industrial and Commercial Incentive program and other County initiatives, lan could provide a workshop on Kickstarter.com. All in favor to proceed with forum and offer in mid-June and have at the Peconic Lane Community Center with stage and break-out rooms. EDC should think of additional topics/programs of interest to the local business community. To be further discussed at the next meeting. Review of Implementation of Goals and Objectives: lan will spearhead objective utilizing social media, Rona and Steve will create "fact sheet" for of leakage analysis. All in agreement that EDC should continue "Listening Tours" with emphasis on hospitality and agriculture industries as well as focus on "Shop Local" campaign.
