HomeMy WebLinkAbout03/25/2013RECEIVED Southold Transportation Commission Southold Town Hall March 25, 2013 Meeting Called to Order 10:05 AM by Chairman Neb Brashich. APFi 2 2 2013 $outhold Town Clerk Members Present: Chairman Neb Brashich, Frank Field, Jamie Richter, Chief Martin Flatley, Margaret Brown, Councilmen Chris Talbot and Bill Ruland, Superintendent Peter Harris and Brian Cummings. Minutes of February, 2013 A motion to approve by Harris, seconded by Flatley; carried. Supervisor's Requests: Phillip Beltz advises the Commission that students from the Town's Youth Group will be embarking on a project that will have them photographing bus shelter throughout Town to document how people are coping with weather conditions during the inclement weather. The group expects to take over 1,000 photos and will share their results with the Commission. At this point Neb advised that he discussed the bus shelter status with a Department of Transportation representative at a recent EETC meeting and the offer for the Lion's Club to donate a shelter to the Town for one of its locations. The representative advised that the Town should be the purchaser, rather than a private entity. Richter states that he does not see any problems with getting this shelter donation to work with the DOT. (A discussion ensued on the history of the bus shelter program) East End Transportation Council Neb reports attending the last EETC meeting and the following items were discussed: The Jitney Water Taxi will not be operating this summer, one of the factors being the older ferries being operated were not cost-effective and were down for servicing often. They did discuss that they were exploring private funding for the pumhase of a second ferry as back-up for the one operating ferry they used. ° Helena Williams is going to talk to officials of the LIRR regarding scoot trains and their feasibility for use on the East End. · Safe Route to Schools funding is still available which includes sidewalk improvements, handicapped-accessible curbing and other measures for municipalities. Councilman Talbot suggested we look into constructing a sidewalk system to include Factory Avenue and Sound Avenue with the Mattituck business distdct and possibly make part of an application. Richter did remind members that the program is for new construction, not repairing of existing sidewalks. · The S92 bus system is raising fares from $2 to $3. Neb stated he raised the question of possibly putting more bicycle racks for use on the buses, but was told that this could not be done because of safety issues to the bus itself. with Mattituck Park Distdct on this topic to explore if they have any interest in same.
