Economic Development Committee (EDC) Meeting Minutes
March 28, 2013
EDC Present: lan Wile, Tony Cocheo, Linton Duell, Amy Maguire Burns and Phillip
Beltz. Also Present: Joan Bishoff, North Fork Promotion Council, Jackie Baker and
Ken Homan, Southold Business Alliance. EDC Excused/Absent: John Stype, Carolyn
Fahey, Donielle Cardinale, Steve Latham, Rona Smith, Councilman Bill Ruland and
Supervisor Scott Russell. Meeting began at 6:05 p.m.
Introductions:
Purpose of Meeting: EDC members would like to meet quarterly with leaders of
Southold business groups to work together to foster economic vitality. Initially the
meeting was planned to explore possible partnership in seeking funding opportunities
through the NYS Long Island Regional Economic Council.
Review of EDC 2012 Accomplishments and 2013 Goals: Handouts provided and
brief discussion of the Town's Comprehensive Plan, Economic chapter, that prompted
the Town Board to create the EDC.
Complement East End Tourism Alliance Grant: Joan discussed the recent NYS
Long Island Regional Economic Council grant awarded to East End Tourism Alliance
(EETA) to promote agritourism, primarily for the wineries. In light of EETA's award,
Phillip reported that he and Carolyn discussed that the EDC should seek ways to foster
collaborating with EETA on this award, such as transportation to hamlet centers to
highlight local businesses in addition to wineries. Joan announced that the NFPC
Marketing Committee will host meeting with EETA, April 4th at 5 p.m. at First and South.
Youth Job Fair: Phillip reported that the EDC and Southold Youth Bureau are hosting
th
a Job Fair on April 20 at 9:30 a.m. at the Recreation Center. He expressed concern
that only two businesses have registered to participate and he will have to cancel the
event if he does not get more participants. Joan will have the information sent to his
members that include Chambers of Commerce and Tony and Jackie will send an
appeal to their membership to participate.
Second Annual Small Business Summit: Distribution of NYS Small Business
Development Center Spring workshop calendar provided by Stony Brook University.
East End Arts Brecknock Hall Workshops: Beginning March 21 st, the East End Arts
Council will sponsor "Creativity in the Workplace" workshops at Peconic Landing's
Brecknock Hall.
Other: lan discussed his experience with Kickstarter.com and offered to provide a
workshop to the public to share his findings on how to work with the organization, its
implications to promote entrepreneurship, etc.
