Welcome to Councilman Dinizio: Phillip welcomed Councilman Dinizio to the
Youth Bureau Board who will serve as liaison along with Councilman Ruland.
Term Expirations: The following board members have terms expiring on March
31st and need to inform the Town Board if they wish to be reconsidered for Youth
Bureau board appointment: Brewer, McLaughlin, Nydegger, Rabbitt, Ruroede,
Standish and White.
Youth Advisory Council (YAC) Report: The YAC membership has exceeded
expectations with nearly 30 members. No more members are needed with the
exception of Greenport as many students will graduate in June. An informal poll
of YAC last meeting revealed that community service activities are of most
interest, this information will complement surveys distributed in schools.
Youth Activities Survey: Through Principal Galati, Elaine arranged for
distribution of survey to students at Southold high school. Jillian received
approval from principal Skuggevik to distribute in Greenport. Andrea has been
collecting from students in Mattituck.
Environmental Initiative Update: In absence of Costa, Phillip reported that the
Town and schools are attempting to develop a relevant environmental project with
students, currently targeting April and/or May for implementation.
Janine Ruland, Mattituck Community Service Initiative: Ms. Ruland
discussed the school's efforts to recruit students to participate in community
service activities. Currently 40 students are involved.
Community Service Day: Under the auspices of the Youth Bureau, the Town
will sponsor a "Community Service Forum" on Saturday, April 27th from 9:30 a.m.
until 11:00 a.m. Suggestion to serve coffee and donuts. Bob volunteered to help
Phillip with this initiative. A letter from the Supervisor will be sent to prospective
organizations with volunteer activities. Suggestion to order a banner listing
"Southold Youth Bureau.".
Review and Discussion of Goals and Objectives 2013: Status appears below:
· Print and disseminate Resource Directory: Jeff is soliciting sponsorships to
underwrite the costs. Irene will ensure that directories are available for
distribution by mid-April.
· Youth Activities Survey: Crissy will have final report of survey results and
analysis by May.
· Youth Job Fair is scheduled for April 20th at Recreation Center, no
businesses have submitted their intent to attend. Phillip will meet with
Chambers, etc. later in March to appeal for their support. Additional
suggestions to solicit McDonalds, Summer Camps (Peconic Dunes), 4H,
Splish Splash, Aquarium, Grocery Stores, etc.
· Promote shared fields to maximize recreational opportunities for youth and
adults: Jeff reported that a schedule is being developed.
· Promote intergenerational opportunities/programs: Karen reported that
students will have opportunity to teach seniors how to use Nexus tablets
from SC Office for Aging. In addition she is hoping to implement an "adopt
a senior" program e.g. youth could assist seniors with shoveling snow, etc..
· Broaden engagement of community (youth and parents) to learn more
about Youth Bureau and its activities through advertisement and social
media. Once again it was suggested that the Youth Bureau develop a
Facebook page and this should be implemented this year.
Next Meeting Date: Monday, April 8th at 5:00 p.m. Human Resource Center
Respectfully Submitted,
Phillip Beltz
