HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/14/2013Town of Southold Youth Bureau Board Minutes January 14, 2013 YB Present: Jacob Branker, Zach Ellis, Tom Rabbitt, Jillian Ruroede, Costa Kokkinos, Cristina Witzke, Karen McLaughlin, Andrea Nyde99er, Jeff Standish, Councilman Bill Ruland and Phillip Beltz. Absent:, Sydney Campbell, Megan Demarest, Irene Tsontakis-Bradley, Officer Bill Brewer, Dan Durett, Elaine White, Rober~ Duffin and Supervisor Scott Russell. Approval of Minutes of December 14, 2012 Youth Advisory Council (YAC) Report: Jacob and Zach reported of YAC community service activity baking cookies and making holiday cards for residents of San Simeon by the Sound. Suffolk County Youth Bureau Events: Phillip reported that the new Youth Bureau director for Suffolk County will initiate two upcoming events: "Act of Kindness Week" in response to Sandy Hook incident along with a "Gang/Violence Prevention forum." Youth Bureau Board Highlights: Distribution of document that will be featured in the upcoming Resource Directory. Review and Discussion of Goals and Objectives 2013: Below are suggested goals for the upcoming year. Board members are encouraged to participate and support these goals. · Print and disseminate Resource Directory (Irene)- Jeff is waiting to hear from the Town Attorney about soliciting sponsorships to underwrite the costs associated with printing, suggestion to print at least 1,000 and distribute to NF Promotion Council booths. · Further disseminate survey to schools to determine what activities students want the Youth Bureau to implement (Crissy) · Work with Chambers of Commerce and Economic Development Committee to host Youth Job/Internship Fair in spring (Tom, Jillian & Phillip)- Suggestion to target Chambers along with grocery stores, restaurants, farm stands, hospitals and Town recreation dept. for lifeguards, etc. Date to be selected before next meeting, a Saturday in April. Zach and Jacob think this will be well-received by students. Tom volunteered to offer a workshop on interviewing, resume writing, etc. · Sponsor Community Service Day in April. Letter is ready to go out. Suggestion to implement beach clean-up that can be geographically targeted such as Truman's Beach in Orient, Horton's Beach in Southold and a beach location in Mattituck. · Work with schools to develop environmental/recycling initiatives (Costa)- Meeting will be set up with school designees in end of January. · Promote shared fields to maximize recreational opportunities for youth and adults (Jeff)- will be further discussed at the January 23rd Parks, Beaches and Recreation meeting. · Promote intergenerational opportunities/programs (Karen)- Karen reported that she has requested 15 Nexus tablets from SC Office for Aging and youth from Mattituck High School could perform community service in helping seniors learn their operation. Costa volunteered to assist with implementation. · Broaden engagement of community (youth and parents) to learn more about Youth Bureau and its activities through advertisement and social media (Costa) Next Meeting Date: Monday, February l lth at 5:00 p.m. Human Resource Center in Mattituck Respectfully Submitted, Phillip Beltz
