Box 1179 Southold,New York 11971 Southold Town Clerk Dear Town Board: Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this letter, and address the concerns of several residents of Mattituck. I would like to take this opportunity to inform the Board of the activities of various guests to the waterfront at the end of Sound Beach Dr;ve. The nri„ate beach and its adiar.ew public certion that can he nrcesged from +be east end of Sound Beach Drive have been invaded by groups of individuals that do not appear to want to share the beach with any of its regular visitors. As it stands now the beach has two types of visitors. One type would like to enjoy the water, sun and the fishing that is available south of the sand bar. The other type comes in large groups accompanied by jet skis. The size of these groups combined with their penchant for reckless behavior on jet skis has alarmed many of the regular visitors to the beach. Just this past weekend, several visitors to the beach were forced to leave because of the noise, and others were afraid to go swimming due to the constant roar of the jet skis so close to the shore. (not to mention the exhaust fumes that clouded over the shoreline) I don't want to appear like a curmudgeon that wants to ruin the fun of a few people that enjoy the speed associated with ajet ski. Individuals have sped across the horizon on jet skis for years without interfering with the enjoyment of the fishermen or sunbathers. However, over the last two seasons the increase in jet ski traffic accompanied with a reckless disregard for anyone else in the water creates a safety risk that cannot be ignored. The jet skis are repeatedly coming closer and closer to shore. and in some cases close to swimmers. I have noticed jet ski drivers towing inflatable tubes filled with kids at high speeds close to the shore. If a swimmer is lucky enough not to get struck by a jet ski he or she still has to dodge an out of control inflatable bouncing over the waves. it is will oniy be a matter of time before a swimmer or driver of one the jet skis is injured. Thank you again for your time. Please look into this matter. I am not alone in my concerns. It was the comments of several other residents that inspired this letter. Sincerely, Lance Carlton
