HomeMy WebLinkAboutEvans, Sarah & David April 9, 2012 To The Southold Town Board As longtime homeowners in Peconic, we are deeply concerned about the changes in the configuration of Goldsmith Inlet, due to what we believe is inappropriate and over- zealous dredging. The extremely high water levels at high tide, as well as the considerable erosion, are extremely worrisome. We share the concerns of our neighbors that the delicate ecological balance of the area is being damaged. Like so many other residents of the area, we have sustained major losses due to flooding, including the loss of a car and severe damage to our property. We are aware that the Town Board has discussed yet again the possibility of shortening the jetty. This action was appropriately rejected by the board many years ago. Study after study has demonstrated that doing so will not positively impact the area. To pursue yet another Environmental Impact Study would be both costly and pointless. We share a deep concern for the safety and ecological health of the inlet and the surrounding area, as well as a concern for all the properties within flood-reach of the inlet and Autumn pond. The continuous deep, straight dredging poses a raft of dangers to the area, as would, we believe, removal of part of the jetty. We therefore urge the Board not to pursue another EIS, but rather to adhere to the advice of the Army Corps of Engineers and allow the inlet to revert to its previous state prior to deep dredging. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
