Parks, Beaches and Recreation Committee
MINUTES November 14, 2012 Meeting
6:30 P.M. in the Conference Room, Annex
Present were: Chairman, Vincent Orlando; Members: Councilman Chris Talbot, Art Leudesdorf, Ken
Reeves, Nancy Foote
Call to order: Chairman Vincent Orlando called the meeting to order at 6:30 P.M. Below are
discussion items:
ADA Playqround -Vinny Orlando updated the committee on the ADA project. Equipment was due to
be delivered within weeks and installation would be scheduled once all the pieces had been
delivered. Vinny will contact company Fred Druck for specifics on delivery.
Shared Fields- Meeting with local school districts has been scheduled for November 19, 2012.
Greenport and Southold districts will attend. Councilman Talbot will contact Mattituck district to
confirm their attendance. Chris would also like a meeting called with coaches to discuss field usage
and ages of sport participants. Sport groups are growing and there is no place to put the new groups
forming. Mattituck Park Districts has 70+ acres with fields. The committee would like to see the park
districts invited to the shared field meeting. Arthur thought field maintenance also needed to be
addressed at the meeting. What maintenance and how often will it need to be done? Chris would
like to see a turf field discussed further, this would cut down on maintenance. The committee
discussed use of the track at Corcoran Park for schools. There is no track on the North Fork with the
exception of the cinder track at Mattituck. Vinny reminded the committee that the Town was looking
for relief and we are looking to the schools for help. Ball fields are also needed. Ken Reeves
indicated that the small field behind PCC is good for practice. He added that the NW corner of
Corcoran Park is not used much. Vinny pointed out that this particular field is underutilized due to the
danger of flying balls and thought that this field could be used for soccer or lacrosse but may not be
big enough for this use. Ken gets a lot of requests for lit field time. Chris thought that if a bit of
money was put into the New Suffolk field, this could be an easy fix and it would give the Town an
additional field at the New Suffolk School.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 PM. The next committee meeting has not been scheduled.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Foote
Committee Secretary
