Youth Advisory Council (YAC) Recruitment: YAC members were requested to
bring a friend to the October 15th meeting that should enhance representation.
Currently all Greenport students are in the 12th grade requiring solicitation of
younger YAC members.
Town of Southold Youth Survey for Community Activities: Students will
distribute surveys at respective schools.
Environmental Initiative: Costa reported that he and Phillip met with the Town's
Renewable and Alternative Energy Committee in October. They too wish to
implement recycling at schools. Several members of their committee will join the
Youth Bureau subcommittee to meet with school Superintendents and/or
designees to discuss implementing environmental initiatives in schools, not
necessarily recycling.
Resource Directory: No report.
Meeting Time, Day and Location: Agreement to keep meetings on Monday at
5:00 p.m. however it would be beneficial to have meetings throughout the Town,
such as Peconic Lane Community Center and/or Town Hall.
North Fork Alliance: The NFA convened a meeting with youth service providers
to inform them that Mattituck, Southold and Greenport school districts have
approved administering the Bach-Harrison Youth Needs Assessment Survey to
grades 7 to 12 in October. Findings will be shared from all the surveys but not
specific to one particular school.
College Preparatory Trainings: Recently there have been several presentations
for parents and students regarding preparations for entrance to college including a
free presentation by Kathy Williams of Southold High School at Peconic Landing.
Phillip will inquire if she would like to provide one on behalf of the Youth Bureau.
Community Service Day: Agreement to launch Community Service Day in the
New Year. Possibilities include January or April (National Volunteer's Month),
suggestion to invite ROTC, Leo Club, Rotary Interact, Island Harvest, etc. Use
]
program to highlight local organizations who can benefit from volunteers and
celebrate volunteerism. This will involve the entire community but spearheaded
by the Youth Bureau. This will be further discussed at the next meeting.
Reviewing 2012 Goals and Objectives and Developing 2013: To be further
developed at future meetings. Recent suggestions appear below:
· Pilot "afterschool program" at community center pending survey results.
· Continue exploration of Youth Court
Next Meeting Date: Monday, November 19th at 5:00 p.m. at the Peconic Lane
Community Center (next to Recreation Center in Peconic).
Respectfully Submitted,
Phillip Beltz
