Parks, Beaches and Recreation Committee
MINUTES September 19, 2012
6:30 P.M. in the Conference Room, Town Hall
Present were: Chairman, Vincent Orlando and Members: Jim McMahon, Arthur Leudesdorf, John
Betsch, Carlos Gonzalez, Ken Reeves, Marie Bratchie, Nancy Foote Guest: Karly Lucarelli
Call to order: Chairman Vincent Orlando called the meeting to order at 6:30 P.M. Below are
discussion items:
ADA Playqround -Vinny Orlando presented to the committee the information of his meeting with
Charlie Reichart. Mr. Reichart is in support of the ADA playground project and has pledged a
donation of $35,000. He would also like to be part of the selection process for the equipment pieces.
Jim McMahon and Arthur Leudesdorf met with Playtime representative Fred Druck last week. Jim
presented the different layout and equipment pieces Fred had discussed in their meeting. The
rendition layout contains both ADA and other equipment costing approximately $100,000. The Town
project has the committed $35,000 donation and a verbal commitment of $15,000 from the Town
Board. The committee discussed starting with 4 pieces of equipment and adding on pieces, using
module type units as the money becomes available. Jim suggested doing a power point presentation
and sending it to potential contributors. Karly thought that posting a picture of the rendition picture of
the completed project at the entrance to the playground would also peak interest for contributions.
Arthur thought the power point could be utilized for complimentary pieces after the $35,000 (possibly
$50,000) had been exhausted. The committee would like to invite Fred Druck to future meetings.
The committee reviewed property layout prepared by Jamie Richter and presented to the group by
Vinny Orlando. The spin/whirl has to be moved to accommodate the new equipment. Equipment is
constantly changing due to design and safety as equipment is brought up to date. Jim added that
there are no wood playgrounds today due to splinters and the materials wear down. Most catalogs
want you to buy the whole kit with pieces tying the whole project together.
Specific playground pieces were discussed. Some members did not like the sandbox, thinking it
may be an invitation to area cats. Karly thought the sandbox would increase cardio for wheelchair
children. Other pieces are picnic table, swing and fun maze. Jim thought that the picnic table could
be built in house and an additional piece be bought in its place. Karly suggested a musical piece
(part 6223).
The footing would be a pour & play surface. The committee would like to see most of the sand
surface of the playgroud (excluding the sandbox) to be removed and replaced with the new footing;
after DPW digs out 3 - 6" of dirt. Also discussed was using mulch rubber on non ADA surfaces.
Arthur suggested looking into bonded rubber as well. With bonded rubber eventually the top layer
needs to be replaced. Arthur thought Mr. Corazzini could be approached to donate the asphalt for
the paths needed at the playground. Vinny would like to see the whole playground ADA compliant.
Vinny is going to approach the Town Board at Tuesday's meeting to determine exactly how much
money is available from the Town for this project, so to have a true budget to work with.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 PM. The next committee meeting was not scheduled at this time.
Respectfully submitted,
