Identifyin,q Themes, Concerns and Makin,q Recommendations to Town Board:
After review of the survey results and comments from the "listening tour" the following were
cited as the most important issues for the EDC to address:
· Public relations-important to address perceptions that it is difficult to develop business
in Southold Town. Important to get information to businesses--develop database of
business addresses, etc. Establish inter-departmental meetings with the applicant so
everyone is in the same room allowing the applicant to get appropriate direction--how
best to expedite decisions such as provide Municity software online to applicants to track
their applications. Finalizing and disseminating the "How To Guide" will also assist with
public relations.
· Education-what do the different departments do, what is the process and who are the
players. Consider establishing a "conduit" to external agencies such as DEC, SC Dept.
of Health, etc. Offer workshops and seminars to businesses that will also assist with
training of employees, work with existing North Fork Business Advisory Group to
educate youth about Job Shadow, Internship and Summer Employment opportunities
· How best to attract new businesses-identify businesses that EDC would like to recruit
within the Town.
· How best to retain existing businesses-identify why businesses are failing.
· Address vacant storefronts
· Affordable housing presents challenges to attract staff
· Future consolidation of business organizations such as chambers, etc. to avoid
duplication of efforts
· Future meeting with "successful" businesses (e.g. Peconic Landing, Stidd Systems,
etc. to assess what additional businesses would complement their work
From the aforementioned, EDC will establish "goals" and "objectives" to achieve goals as well
as develop a timeline for initiation and completion of tasks.
Hostinq Workshops and Seminars: Tabled.
The meeting concluded at 4:10 p.m.
Next IVleetinq Date/Time: EDC will meet Thursday, October 4th at 2:30 p.m. in the Annex.
Respectfully submitted,
Phillip Beltz
