AIR CONTROL Tho Air Control(s) located next to your spa-side con~l penal allows you fo change the power of the jets by regulating the amount of air that is mixed with the water coming out of the jets. 13 HYDRO JETS AdapteFIo~ Jets- The larger jets in your spa allow you to m-direct the jet stream by changing the position of the nozzle. You con also regulate the force of the massage by rotating the jet face dock'~se to mduco the force or counter-dockwise to increase the ~co. Noitce that tuming off the flow to some jets increasas the flow to the other jets. To avoid damage to your spa's plumbing and components, do not turn off more than haft of these jets at the same time. AdaptsSsage' rotating nozzles am evailable from your dealer to mplaco the direddonal adjustable nozzles in the AdaptaFio Jets. Eum Direcltonal Jets- The Eura Dimcitnoaljets, with eyeball nozzles, deliver a direct, mom focused massage. You may purchase additional Euro-Pulse® assemblies from your Caldem® dealer. The Euro-Puise jet features a special insert that creates a soft, pulsaltng, rotary massage. If you desire, you may install a Euro-Pulse jet in placo of any of the Euro Directional jet by rotating the jet face counter dodm~e and pull it off. Remove the nozzle and ring seat. Then simply insert the spinner body and Iwist Euro-Pulse Jet face into place. DIVERTER VALVE The diverter valve on the Cumbedand ® spa model allows you to direct the flow of water from the pump to several combinaltons of jets. The fonddnos of this diverter valve can best be teamed by expadmentation as follows: 1. Set all air controls to the "ON" poslitno by rotating couetemlockwtse. 2. Turn on the pump. 3. Turn the hendle on the diverter valve and see which groups of jets am affected. (Note that you con adjust the diverter valve to any pasitJon behveen the ~ possible extremes to achieve the jet pressure that feels past to you.) IMPORTANT: Your spa is not designed to provide full power to all jets when the diverter valve is in fire "mid" position. WATERFALL VALVE The Olympia spa is equipped with a cascading waterfall feature. Il is activated by pressing JETS and turning the valve, located no the front interior wall, counterdonkwise. The flow is regutated by turning the waterfall valve to the desired position. It's impartaet to have dasn wa~r. Water maintsnance is one of the leaet understood, yet most important areas of spa owcemhip. Your dealer con guide you through the process of achieving and maintaining perfect water in your spa, given your local conditions. Your program will depend on your water's mineral content, how often you use your spa, and how many people use it. WATER TERMINOL OG Y The following chemicol terms are used in this Water Quali~ and Maintenance section. Understanding their meaning will help you to better underatsnd the water maintenance process. Bromamthes: Compounds formed when bromine combines with nitrogen Mm body oils, udne, perspiration, etc. Unlike chloremines, bremaminss have on pungent odor and are elfectiva sanitizera. Bromine: A halogen sander that is commonly used in stick, tablet, or granular form. The SPA FROG~ sanitizing system is the only solid bromine-approved system. See the DO's and DON'Ts of Spa Water Maintenance for addiitonal information. Calcium Hardness: The amount of dissolved calcium in the spa water. This should be appreximately 150-400 ppm. High levels of colcium con couse cloudy water and scaling. Low levels con couse harm to the spa equipment. Chloreraines: Compounds famed when chlorine combines with nibogen from body oils, udne, perspiration, etc. Chioremines con couse eye irfitetion as wall as having a strong odor. Unlike b'omamines, chloramines are weaker, slower senitizem. Chlorine: An effldent sanitizing chemical for spas. Wetkins® Manufacturing Corporation recommeads the use of sodium dichlor-~pa granuiofod chlorine. This type is preferred becouse it is totally soluble and neady pH nautral. Chlodne (o~ Bromine) Residual: The amount of chiodne or bromine remaining after chlorine or bromine demand has been satisfied. The residual is, '~3ere~e, the amount of sani~zer which is chemically available to kill bactehe, viruses and algae. Con'osion: The gradual wearing away of metal spa parts, usually coused by chemical action. Generally, corrosion la sausad by Iow pH or by water with levels of TA, CH, pH or senitizer which are outside the recommended ranges. DPD: The preformd reagent used in test kits to measure the Free Available Chlorine. Halogen: Any one of these five elements: fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine. MPS: Monopersu~e is a non-chlddne oxidizer. Ozkltzer. The use of an oxidizing chemical is to prevent the buildup of contaminants, ma-~mize sanitizer efficiency, minimize combined chlorine and improve water ded[y Ozone: Ozone is a powerful ox~izieg agent which is produced in nature and artificially by man. Ozone ton'ns no by-products of chloramines (ozone actually oxidizes chlemmines) and will not alter the water's pH. 14 PathoGen: A microorganism such as bacterium that cause disease. pH: The measure of the spa watar's acidity and alkalinity. The recommended pH for the spa water is 7.2 to 7.8. Below 7.0 (considered neutral), the spa water is too addlo and can damage the healing system. Above 7.8, the water is too alkaline and can result in cloudy water, and scale formatien on the shell and heater. ppm: The abbreviation of "pads par million", the standard measurement of chemical concenb'ation in water. Identical to mg/I (milligrams par liter). Reagent: A chemical material in liquid, powder, er tablet form for use in chemical testing. Saniifizer: Sanitizers are added and maintained at recommended residuals to prelect bathers against pathogenic organisms which can cause disease and infec~on in spa water, Scale: Rough caldum-heaitng deposits that can coat spa surfaces, heaters, plumbing lines and clog filters. Generally, scaling is caused by mineral content combined with high pH. Additionally, scale forms more raadily at higher water temperatures. Shock Trestnlent: Also known as "supar..chlorination" when chlorine is used. Shock treatment is a process of adding significant doses of a quick dissolving senitizer (sodium dichlor is recommended) to oxidize non-filterable ergania weste and to remove chloramines and bromamines. Total Alkalinity: The amount of bicarbonates, carbonetas, and hydroxides present in spa water. Proper total alkalinity is important for pH control. If the TA is too high, the pH is difficult to adjust. If the TAis too Iow, the pH will be di~cuit to held at the proper level. The desired range of TA in spa water is 80 to 180 ppm. GENERAL INFORMATION THE THREE FUNDAMENTAL AREAS OF WATER MAINTENANCE: · WaterFiltration · ChemicaIBalance/pH Control · Water Sanitation Water sanitation is the responsibility of the spa owner. To ixopady sanitize the spa, ~atkins highly recommends the SPA FROG~ water care system. This system will chemically control the badeda and virases present in the fill water or introduced during use of the spa. Bacteria and vi[uses can grow quickly in undoman~ad spa water. The water's chemical balance and pH control are am the responsibility of the spa owner. You'll have to add chemicals to maintain proper levels of Total Alkalinity (TA), Calcium Hardness (CH) and pH. Proper water balance and pH control will minimize scale buildup, extend the life of the spa, and allow the senilJzer to work at an oplJmum level. METHODS FOR TESTING THE SPA WATER Accurate wa~ testing and analysis is an important part of effec~vely managing your spa water. You must have the ability to test for: · Total Alkalinity (TA) · Caldum Hardness (CH) , pH · Senitizer Two types of te~ng methods are recognized and recommended by Wa~,ins Manufacturing Coq:~oratlon: 1. The Reagent Test Kit is a method which provides a high level nt accuracy. The reagents come in either liquid or tablet form. 2. Test Sb'ipa are a convenient testing method used by many spa owners. Keep in mind that test strips are susceplfole to heat and meistura contamina~3n, which will result in inacourste readings. Always road and carefully follow the directions included with the Test Kit or Test Strips to ensure the accuracy of the test results. BASIC CHEMICAL SAFETY When using chemicals, read the labels carefully and follow dirocitons predsely. Though chemicals protect you and your spa when used cormcity, they can bo hazardous in concanb*atad form. Always obae~ve the following guidelines: Allow only a responsible person to handle spa chemicals. KEEP THEM OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN. Accurately measure the exact quantities spacifed, never more. Do not overdose your spa. Handle all containers wih care. Store in a cool, dry, well ventilated place. Always replace the caps on their proper containers when not in use. Don't inhale fumes or allow chemicals to come in contact with your eyes, nose, or maulh. Wash your hands immediately after use. Follow the emergency advice on the product label in case of accidental contact, or if the chemical is swallowed. Call a doctor or the local Poison Cont~ Center. If a doctor is onedad, take the product container along with you so that the substance san be idenitfled. · Don't lat chemicals get on surrounding surfacos or landscaping. . Don't use a vacuum cleaner to clean up chemical spills. · Never smoke aroued chemicals. Some fumes can be highly flammable. · Don't store any chemicals in the spa equipment compartment. 15 HOW TO ADD CHEMICALS TO THE SPA WATER IMPORTANT: All spa water chemicals (other than SPA FROG cadedges), including MPS Plus (shock), chledne, granulated pH increaser or deoreaser, granulated total alkalinity increaser, calcium hardness increaser, I~uid stain and scala inhibitor, and liquid da-fcamer must always he added directly into or in front of the filter compaF~nent while a jet pump is running, and il must run for a minimum of ten minutes. To Administer Spa Water Chemicals: 1. Fold back the cover and remove the filter compartroent cover. 2. Carefully measura the recommended amount of chemical and slowly pour it over the ltlter basket ama. Use cara not to splash chemicals on your hands, in your eyes, on the spa sheet sudace, or on the siding. 3. Redlaca the fitter campadment cover. After tan minutes, shut ctf the jot pump{s) and dese the cover. Risk of Drowning: Never leave an opan spa unaftended! ,~ WARNING: High seni~zer levels can cause discomfort to the user's eyes, lungs and skin. Always allaw the canltizer level to fall to the recommended range bede using the spa. IMPORTANT "SUPER CHLORINATION~ION-CHLORINE SHOCK TREATMENT" NOTE: After administering a super chlodnetien ffeatmeot or non-chlorine shock to your spa, leave the cover open for a minimum of 20 mlautes to allow the oxidizer gas to vent. A high cancanflalten of flapped oxidizer gas which may exist as a result of the shock treatment (not daily sanitation) may eventually cause discoloration or vinyl degradation to the botlom of the cover. This type of damage is considered chemical abuse and is not covered under the ten'ns of the limited waffan[y. THE WATKINS SPA WATER MAINTENANCE PROGRAM Each step in your water maintananee program is dependant on the complaffen of the previous steps. Omi~ng a step or failing to reach the recommended range may cause an imbatanca in your water's chemis~/. Unbalanced water chemis~ can damage the spa and its compooerds, as wall as cause discomfort for the user. BALANCING THE TOTAL ALKALINITY (TA) A. Tr~ recommended Total Nkalinity (TA) for your spa water is 80 - 180 ppm. B. Total AJkalinlty is a measura of the totel lavels of caad:mnates, bica~bocates, hydroxides, and other alkaline substancas in the wateE TA is referred to as the water's 'pH buffer". In other words, it's a reassure of the abilily of the water to resist changes in pH lavel. C. If the TAis too Iow, the pH level will ltuctuate widely from high to Iow. Fluctuations in pH can cause corrosion or scaling of the spa compenente. Low TA can be cormcta by adding sodium hydrogen carbonate (pH/AIkalt nity Up). D. If the Total Alkalinity is too high, the pH leset will tend to he high and may he difficult to bring down. It can be lowered by using sodium bisulfate (pH/Alkalie~ down) E. Onee the TA is balancad, it normally remains stabla, although the addilton of mom water with a high or Iow alkalin~ will raise or lower the TA reeding of the water. F When the Totel Alkalinily is within the racammended range, proceed to the next step. BALANCING THE CALCIUM HARDNESS (CH) A. The reocmmendad Caldum Hardness (CH) level for your spa is 150- 400 ppm. B. Caldum Hardness is a measure of the tatal arnount of dissctved caldum in the water. Calcium helps ocntrol the coffosive nature of the spa's water. That's why calcium-low water (commonly known as "seE' water) is not recommended. It is very coffesive to the equipment, and can cause staining of the spa shell. C. If the CH is too high (cammonly known as "hard water'), forrnaiten of scale on the spa's shell surfaca and equipment can rosult. CH can be decruased by dSufion-a mixture of 75% hard and 25% soft water will usually yield a reading within the correct range. If soft water is not availabla or pra~cal for you, a stain and scale inhibi~ should he added to the spa water, according to label isa~uddons. D. ft the CH is too Iow add CH increaser. E. Once the CH is balanced, it normally remains statite, alti3ough the addilien of mare watar ~h a high or Iow caldum content will raise or lower Ihe CH reading of the wate~ F When the Caldum Hardness is within the recommended range, proceed to the next step. BALANCING THE pH A. The recommended pH level for your spa water is 7.2 - 7.8. B. The pH level is the measure of addily and alkalinity. Valu~ above 7.8 ara alkaline; these helaw 7.2 ara acidic. Maintaining the proper pH level is extremely important for: · Oplt mizing the effectivenese of the senitizer. · Maintaining water that is camfodable for the user. · Preventing equipment deteheration. C. If the spa water's pH level is too Iow, the following may result: · The sanitizer will diseipate rapidly. · The water may hecome initating to spa users. , The spa's equipment may corrnde. If the Ifil is too Iow, it can be increased by adding sodium hydrogen carbonate (pH/Alkalinity Up) to the spa water 16 7.6 COMFORT ZONE iDEAL 7.4 7.2 (CORROSIVE RAISE pH ZONE) D. ff the pH level is too high, the following may result: . The sanilizer is less effective. · Scale will fo~ on the spa shell surface and the equipment. , The water may become cloudy. . The filter certddge pores may become obstructed. If the pH is too high, it can be decreased by adding sodium bisulfate (pH/Nkalteity Down) to the spa water NOTE: After adding sodium hydrogen carbonate or sodium bisulfate, hefom tes~ng the water for pH. Measurements taken tce soon may not he accurate. E. It is impodant fo check the pH on a regular (weekly) basis. The pH will he affected by the bather Ioed, the addition of new water, the addison of vaedus chemicals, and the type of sanilizor used. When the pH is within ~3e recommended range, proceed to the final step. MAINTAINING THE SANITIZER LEVEL A. Sanitizer is extremely irnportent for killiog algae, baderia and viruses, and praventing unwanted organisms frorn growiog in the spa. At the same time, you donl want too high a sanltizer level, or it can initate your skin, lungs, and eyes. B. Always maintain the saniitzer level in your spa at the resornmended level for each typa of senitizer. C. Watkins reoommends the following sanitizer: · SPA FROG® sanit[ziog system (rniceral and b~'ornine) D. Waikins also approves the following sanitizers: ·Sodiurn Dichiore-s-Tfiazinethone (sodiure dicfllor or chlerlne) o Biguanide ,~ WARNING: DO NOT use td-chbr chledne or any type of compressed bromine or chbfine, add or any type of sanltJzer which is not recommended by ~ins Manufacturing Corporation. 1 Total Alkalinity 80 180 2 Calcium Hardness 150 400: 3 pH 4 Sanitizer Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate, or Sodium Bicarbonate Calcium HardneSS Increaser 7.2 7.8 Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate Sodium Bisulfate Usea mixture of ?5% h rd and 25% soft ~r or use a Stain and Scale Inhibitor Sodium Bisulfate See section on Maintaining the Sanitizer Level 17 SPA FROG® WATER CARE SYSTEM (THE SPA FROG MINERAL CARTRIDGE IS NOT APPROVED FOR USE IN CANADA.) Tho SPA FROG Water Cam system is comprised of the following products: ~ SPA FROG mineral caffrtdge that introduces minerals into the spa water, inhibiting bacteria growth. Whon cembbad with Monarch® MPS Plus, it oxidizes paraculates in the spa water. Me SPA FROG Bomlns (BCDMH) is the only reeommended sanitizer that will work in conjunction with tho SPA FROG mineral cer~fidge in this system. Monamh MPS Plus Non-Chlorine Shock (MPS/Monogersulfate) is an oxidizing chemical used to prevent the buildup of contaminants, maximize senitizer el~dency, and improve water cledty. Monarch Corona Dfacha~ge (CD) Ozone Gensrafor (optional) - The Monarch high output ozone system is the only ozone purification system approved fa' instellation in your Calderae Spa. The Uonamh ozone system utilizes CD technology th produce a higher concenka~n of ozone thon is produced by competing chip slyle CD or ultraviolet light ozone systems. NOTE: Refer to your SPA FROG owners manual for start-up and operation instructions. The owner's manual is included with the SPA FROG starter kit. It is important to follow the recommended appitca~on and maintenance programs outlined for each product's use. If the spa is being used over an extended pedod or time, such as a whole afternoon or evening, additional sanitizer will ho needed. A weekly 'shock treatment" is required. The shock treaimant quickly destroys any remaining contaminants while mvitelizing tho bromine in the water. To weekly "shock beat" your spa, we recommend that you use eithor Monarch MPS Plus (sodium dichlor may also be used). Sodium dichlor may be a mom appropriate wae~ shock fa'those usem that experience heavy bather load conditions. IMPORTANT NOIE: Monarch MPS Plus is an oxidizer, not a senitizer. SPA FROG CARTRIDGE REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS ne SPA FROG bromine catt#dge should be mplaced evely 2-4 weeks, depending ea User Load. Tho SPA FROG mineral cartridge should ho replaced evePj 4 months. Whon repladng the mineral certhdge, it is highly recommended that the spa ho dreiced and refilled at tho same time. After refilling tho spa with water, balance the Total Alkolini[y (TA), Calcium Hardness (CH) and pH to the mcommanped levels. Shock the spa by adding Monarch MPS Plus non-chlodne shock. To replace SPA FROG ca~dges, follow these steps: 1. Turn off powar to the spa. 2. Unscrew SPA FROG cap on top edge of spa. 3. Turn handle counter-dcokwise. 4. Lift se~dge holder up and out of sps. 5. Turn top cap of mineral ca~dge to s~ng ~. (The mineral carttidge should last 4 months.) Tom top cap of bromine cartridge th selting #7. NOTE: Adjust bromine cartridge setting down by one setting each day until a residual of 1.0 - 2.0 ppm levol of bromine is established. (The bromine cartridge should last 2 - 4 weeks.) 6. Snap bromine cartridge in at bottom of holder and mbaral cartridge on top. NOTE: It is important that the bmmba cartddcje is ea battom; otherw~se, tho bromine car~dge muld ho dispensed pmmaturely. 7. Reinstall carthdge holder into spa, push down, and ~st cla.:kwise. 8. Rep[ace SPA FROG cap. 9. Reaonnect power th the spa. ~ WARNING: High sander levels can cause discomfort to tho user's eyes, lungs and skin. Always allow the senitizer level to fall to the recommended range before using the spa. FOLLOWING THE SPA FROG SANITIZER ROUTINE Duting the first month of ownership, measure the sanitizer residual daily in order to establish the corred setting on carthdgea for User Load and Usage nme versus Sanifizer Needed. · The User Load of the spa is the number of times anyone enters tho spa. o The Usage ~me is simply the amount of time a user spemls in the spa. · Sanitizer Needed is the amount neaded to accomrnodate the numbar of uears and their combined usage itme. Fa' e~mple, two spa users who regularly use tho spa once an evening for twenty minutes create a spee~itc and semowhot consistent demand on the senittzer. Dudng tho flint month of ownership, these two users can determine exactly how much sanitizer to use in order to maintain tho proper msidcaL If, at any time, the user bad and/ or usage pattern changes dramaitcally (i.e. invited guests), the amount and frequency of senitizer required increases dramatically. ne greater the usage itme, or the hothor load, the faster the residual ~lue is diminished. BROMINE A. Sanitizing chemicals, such as bromine, are oxidants that kill bacteria and viruses in the water. If you are using the SPA FROG system, the recommended bromine level for your spa water is 1.0 - 2.0 ppm. If you are not using the SPA FROG system, your bromine level should be between 3 - 5 ppm. NOTE: For Canada, if you are only using the bromine cartridge, your bromine levels should be between 3-5 ppm. B. Watkins Manufacturing Corperation reeemmonds the use of granulated bromine for saniitzthg the water. Granalated bromine is preferred because it is totally selubis, diseolves quickly and is neady pH neutral, 18 C. Maintaining the proper level of bromine dudng use is extremely imporiant. D. if the bromine level is too Iow, hacteda and viruses can grow rapidly in the warm water. E. If the bromine level is too high, the water can cause discemfor~ to the user's eyes, lungs and skin. Simply allow some time to paus in order fro' the bromice to dissipate. F. When the bromine level is within the recommended range, the spa is ready to be enjoyed. DO'S AND DON'TS BO check your bromine chemical level prior to each use. BO checnge the SPA FROG mineral carb'idge eve*y 4 months. DO test Total Alkalinity and pl-I weekly. DO use Monarch MPS+ non-chtedus {Pmonperaulfate) oxidizer for spa only. BO store all chemicals in a tightly sealed contdner in a cool, dry place. DON'T use sodium bromide or biguanidne. ~ece arc an active sanitizer and will combine with the silver ions to inactivate them. DON'T use a water clsdfter, Clar~ers will ceuce the spa water to become cloudy. DON'T use the Monarch silver ce*tddge with SPA FROG, SUPER CHLORINATION Super Chlorination is a process used to eliminate chlodne smell (if you ara using chlohae) by "burning-off' chloramlees (used chledne). '~is helps maintain the proper level of frce chlorine. When giving your water a super chlorination ~atment, open the cover at least half way ~or twenty minutes to allow the chbdne gas fo vent olT. The high concentmlion of chlodne gas which may exist as a result of super chbdnation (not daily sanitation) may eventually cause discolomtten or degradation to the bottom of the cover, which would not ha covered under the terms of ~ WARNING: There ara several forms of stebilized chbdne available fa' use in spas and swimming pools. Each fo~m has specific chamicol characte*teitcs. It is extremely important that the form you choose is specifically designed for use in spas. Use of an incon*ed product such as th-chloro, which has a very Iow pH (2.6), dissolves too quiddy in hot water rasuiting in ex'demely high levels of chlorine, and is designed for concrete or p~aster swimming psols, WILL cause damage to your spa. Use of a liquid, or any lypa of compmsaed bromine or chledne, acid, or any type or sanitizer which is not recommended by Watkice Manufectodng Coq3oratJoa, WILL damage your spa and is specifically not covered under ~ terms of the limited IMPORTANT: Granulated chbdoa (sodium dichler) will degrade if stored impropady We recommend purchasing chlodne in one, two, or five pound containers and slodng it in a cool, dry place to maintain its potency. ~ WARNING: Never leave an open spa unattended, especially if thera are children pmsenlf SUPPLEMENTAL WATER MAINTENANCE DO NOT USE THE SPA UNTIL THE TEST KIT READING IS BELOW THIS LEVEL RECOMMENDED LEVEL SAFE ADD CHLORINE DO NOT USE SPA; ADD CHLORINE TO REACH RECOMMENDED SAFE LEVEL Proper water sanitation and mineral belence (pH control) ara absolutely essential for a complete spa water maintenance program. Hera ara two other popular wster additives that are optional: 1. Mineral Deposit Inhibitors As water evaporates from your spa and new water is added, the amount of dissolved minerals will incmaso. (Minimize evaporation by keeping the cover on the spa whenever possible.) Re spa water may eventually become "hard' (Calcium Hardness too high) enough to damage the heater by caloi~ng its surface. Proper pH contrc~ can minimize this. Normal soap build-up will mquira water re'placement regularly enough that mineral daposite normally ara not a problem. Occasionally, high iron or copper content in the water may produce green or brown steins on the spa. A stain and scale inhibitor may help to reduce these metals. NOTE: Well water may contain high censentra~ns of minerals. The use of a Iow water volume, extra-line pore water lfltor will help to rameve many of the large* par~cles dudng the filling of the spa. 2. Foam Inhibitors Spa water requires changing due to the buildup of soap in the water. Typically, soap will cause the spa water to foam when the jets are used. Soap is introduced into the spa water from tv, ra sources: usam' bodies, which retain a soap residue after shawedng, and swimming apparel, which rateins soap after washing. Foam inhibitore can suppress foam, but cannot remove soap horn the water. Soap is very difficult to remove ~ the water because soap is not oxidized by any chemical added to the spa. Only ozone con oxidize soap, Eventually the soap build-up in the water will be concentrated, resulting in an unclean feeling on the bather's skin, which is impossible to ramedy. When this oucure, ~s time to drain and mlfll the spa, Depending on the soap input, the water should last about 4 months before needing to be drained. 19 Prior to each use (Test before adding any chemicals; do not add any chemicals if proper or higher leveb are founds) Every four months Add one (1) tablespoon Mop~rch® MPS Plus (monepemulfata)* per 250 gallons Drain spa, replace mineral cadddge, and refill ~3ur spa, Follow spa Start-Up and Refill Procedures. MONARCH® OZONE SYSTEM (OPTIONAL) The Monamh high output ozone system is tho only ozone pudficatfen system approved for installation in your Caldera® spa. The Monarch ozone system utilizes Corona Discharge (CD) technology to produce a higher connentralJon of ozone than is Ixndusad by competing ultraviolet light (UV) ozone systems. The Mcoarch high output ozone system gmutly enhances the quality of the spa waler when used to supplement the spa owner's regular water maintenance program. Contrary to some information drcolatad throughout the pool and spa industry regarding ozone systems, ozone be used as a single-source senitizer, water clerirter, anti- foamer, and mineral chelating agent. Watkins Manufactudog ~tion recommends feliowing the SPA FROG® senit[zing system when using an ozone pudr~ion system to sesum water sanitation and the highest quality of purified water. Cleaning the Ozone Injector On occasion, a mineral build up may dog tie ozone iwJector, causing a lad( of ~ or Iow flow, of ozone bubbles. To prevent this, refer to the following instrucfJons to dean the injector: 1. Disconnect power totnd spa. 2. Access tie equipment compartment. 3. Plane 16 ounces of white vinegar into a container such as a cop or bucket. Place tie container on the equipment compartment fionr. NOTE: White vinegar will not damage any of tie spa compouenls. 4. Carefelly loosen the long tubing to the bottom of the ozonetor. A liquid substanve may be found inside the tubing. If a liquid substance is present, BE CERTAIN NOT TO COME IN CONTACT WITH 11.1E MCIUID (SEE WARNING BELOIN) Nitric acid accumulates in the air lines of the ozonator and injector. Nitric acid will cause severe chemical bums if direct skin contact is made, so ahvays wear protective gloves, glasses and clothing when working on the ozonator or injector lines. To prevent inhalation or ingestion of the nitric acid, DO NOT blow or inhale with your mouth to any of the adapters, riftings or tubing of the ozonator or injector air lines. 5. Place the end of the tubing into the vinegar, making car[ain that the end of the tubing sits at tie bottom of the container. 6. Reconnect power to the spa. 7. Run the spa until all 16 ounces of the vinegar are gone. This should allow an ample flow of vinegar to be ren through the injector and clear the blockage. 8. Dlecoonect power tothe spa. 9. Remove the empty cop or bud(et. 10. Reinstall the tubing to the bottom of the ozocator. 11. Close tho equipment compartmeet door. 12. Reconnect power to the spa. 2O The Monarch* ozone system is practically maintenaase-frse because it is located within ~ spa's equipment compadmenl. If bubbles are appearing at the spa's heater retum, but the water is not as dear as usual, then the oparatJon of the ozone generator should be checked by your dealer. ,A WARNING: Contact your dealer if your spa requires troubleshooting beyond the scape of this manual. Monamh ozone systems should only be serviced by a qualified technician. WARRANTY NOTE: Cleaning of the ozone injector is not cavered under the warrec~j. Refer to the Ozone section of this manual for ozone injector cleaning instructions.. DO'S AND DON'TS · DO add all chemicals slowly into or in fTont of the §tier compartment with the jet pump operating for ten minutss. · DO use spacial care if using baking seda to dean either the intedor or exteber plastic surtacse. · DO use only a grenular ferm of bromine sani'~er. . DON'T use swimming pod (muria~) acid to lower pH. · DON'T splash pH increaser additives on the siding. · DON'T use Compressed SanilJzers. The use of bromine sticks or tablets in floatere, which may become entrapped in a lounge or cooling seat (or sink to the spa floor), have been shown to cause discolore~3n of or sudece disb'eas to a spa's she[ · DON'T use a fleater typa senitization system as a Iow or no maintenance soluiJon to your spa maintenance program. Fleaifng dispansers can become trappeq in one area and cause an over-canifizatine (or chemical bum) of that par~cotar area. If the dispaasor setting is too high, the high connentmtion can discolor the spa shell and damage the underside of the cover. Automatic floating dispensers have a tendency to either over-brominate or under-breminote as the rate of erosion vabes greatly. Damage to the spa and cover can occur very quickly. Watkins Manufacturing Corporation does not recommend the use of any floating chemical diapanser. Damage to the spa shell or companects caused by a floating chemical dispenser is specifically not covered under the terms of the limtied wan'anty. · DON'T use a senitizer which ia not designed tor spas. · DON'T use household bleach (liquid sodium hypechlori[e). · DON'T broadcast or spdnkle thee chemicals onto the water surface. This method may cause chemically-induced spa surface blistering (cbemicot abuse) MONARCH SILVER ION PURIFIER (OPTIONAL) Question: How are the silver ions added to the water? Answer, The silver cartridge contains ceramic beads that are in~used with silver. By piecing the car~dge in the holder flier standpipe, it is subject to the ~ of water creoted by the oparation of the jet pumps. The flowing water, through a chemical eresion precass, uarfies with it the silver ines necessary to add a sanitizing residual to the spa water. Oueatton: What happens if I do net add the weekly shock ~eatment? Answer: The cantaminants in the water may coat the silver uarttidge's ceramic beads, blecking the silver ions' release into the water. When this occars, there will be no residual of silver lens present in the water, eliminating them from the ssnilizing process. Question: How often should the Monarch® silver cartridge be replaced? Answer: The cartridge must he replaced every tour months. Please refer to the instnJctmns provided with each SPA FROG silver cartridge. Queation: Can I use the Monarch silver ca~dge with the SPA FROG water care system? Answer: The Monarch silver carthdge is not compatible with SPA FROG or with bromine. COMMON WATER CHEMISTRY QUESTIONS Why is the use a floatar not recommended to sanitize my spa water? Wa~dns Manufactudng Caporatien does not recommend the use of a ftoatar for three reasons: 1. The floater is unable te cantrol the rets at which the saniiJzer is disselveq into the weter. When a floater is tirst placad in a spa, the sanitizer level can be extremely high. High sander levels can chemically bum or discolor the spa's shell or the underside of the caret. Then, after a peded of time, the sanitizer level dispensed by the floater will fall to near zero. A Iow santiJzer level will allow viruses, bacteha or algae to grow, 2. Fleaters tend ta stsy in one area of the spa most of the time, causing this area te he expased te extreme ssnitizer levets. 3. The flooter may allow pieces of the highly caneentratsd sanitizer to fall out and sottle on the tioor er seat of the spa shell. These piecas of sanitizer will chemically burn (blister) the spa shell. Although your spa shell is specifically designed to resist the effects of spa chemicals, no spa surfac~ can withstand this b/pa of highly concentrated chemical. Remember, chemical abuse is specifically not covered under the ten'ns of the warran~j. Question: When I open my spa, I smotl chlorine. How do I get dd of this smo[l? Answer: There are [wo typec of chicdne in your spa. The first is the Free Available Chlorine, which is the chlhane available to sanitize your spa. This Free Available 21 Chlo~ne does not have an odor. The second is Chloremine, which is residue from chlortee already expended. Chloremines have a strong chlerine odor. The smeti from Chleramines can be eliminated by ~sbed(ing" he water. If you smell chlorine in the water, your spa is reminding you to add a shock lmatmeot. Question: Why can't I till my spa with soft water? Answer: Soft water is essentially the same as regular water, except that most or all of the calcium has been replaced by sodium. Soft water may be corrosive to the heater and other components. Replacement of spa components damaged by soft water is extremely expensive. Question: I am ~ing to mcluce the number of chemicals to which my family is exposed. Do I really need to use so many chemicals and in such large amounts? Answer, While over-exposure fa any chemical can be unheatihy, many Iow levels of chemicals are effective and beneficial. In the case of spa water, the chereicals mcomrnended in the Caldera® Spa Water Maintenance prngrem are needed to protec~ the user from water-pome pathogens (disease-causing microbes) and to prevent corrosion of spa components. Question: Why isn't water chemisW damage covered by the warren'~? Answer: The chemical levels and water quality of the water in the spa are under your direct control. Wtih proper basic care, the spa will provide many years of hot water relaxaUon. If you are unsure about any chereicol or its usage in the spa, contact your Authorized Caldera Dealer or Watkins Manufastudng Corporation. Remove leaves, foreign matter, and debris, it is ve~ important to keep your spa tilter carlddge dean and free of particles to ensure proper water flow. A dean filter permits the hydrotherapy system to function prugedy and also allows more efficient filter cycles. Depending on how frequent~ your spa is used, we recommend cleaning the spa filter cattlidge ovary four weeks, if this is not done, the filter may dog and mstrlet water flow, which causes improper filtration and poor jet performance. A WARNING: The f'mquency and duratiea of use, and the number of occupants all contribute to determining the apamFiate time between filter cleanings. Mom use means that mom frequent tilter cleanings will be required. FILTER CARTRIDGE REMOVAL AND CLEANING 1. Turn the power to the spa OFF, then proneed es tollews: Push down slightly and tom tilter basket counterclockwise to unlock, then pull the basket and weir out. 3. Install filter then mp~ace basket and weir by inseritng and rotating clockwise to lock into Ix~ition. CARE OF THE SPA PILLOWS Spa pillows will provide years of comfort if treated with cam. They have been pesiitoned above the water level to minimize the bleaching effects of chlorinated water and other spa water chemicals. To extend their life, whenever the spa shell is being cleaned, the spa pillows should be mmeved and doaned. Body oils can be removed with a mild soap and water solution. ALWAYS rinse otf the spa pillows thoroughly to remove any soap residue. If the spa is not going to be used for a long palled of time (that is dudng a vacation or if the spa is winterized), or when the spa water is being super-chlednated, the spa pillows shou!d be removed until the next use of the spa. To remove and replace the spa pillows: 1. Carefully lift one end of the pillow away fTom the spa shell. 2. Continue tiffing one end until all pillow retainers om released from the pillow IMPORTANT: Just pulling the pillow straight up and eat of the shell mcass will eventually damage the pillow. This abuse is not covered under warranty 23 3. To reinstallthe spa pillow, carefully hand the pillow slightly to allow o~e of the pillow retainers to slip into the recess in the hack of the pillow. 4. Keeping the pillow slightly haat, slide the other pillow retainer into the recess in the back of the pillow. 5. After all the pillow mtainem are in place, press the pilbw down into the recess in the spa shell. DIVERTER VALVE MAINTENANCE If your Cumharland ® spa's diverler valve becomes ditflcult to fum, it is likely that send or grit has become lodged inside the valve body.
