I'm going to be in the city several days this week, and was unsure whether I left you my home or cell number so Jim King (or yourself)could get back to me -my cell is 516- 650-4607. All my dock builder needs is the spot where the catwalk begins on the landward side. The stake the surveyor placed 18 mos. ago has washed away, and, for a variety of reasons, I won't be able to get him back here(the architect who did the second drawing after the Board shortened the catwalk and lengthened the retractable ramp, Mark Schwartz, was not at my house, and only prepared the revised drawing based upon the 2012 survey and the Board's February 2013 revision to the plans). If it is just a matter of advising me the number of feet landward from where the beginning of the present dock is situated, and I measured it off and placed the stake, perhaps we could do that? The builder doesn't want to start work without this information, and he thinks he can begin construction within the next week to 10 days or so. I appreciate your help- many thanks. John White Sent from my iPad i Cantrell, Elizabeth From: John <lawyerli @aol.com> Sent: Monday, November 25, 2013 9:52 AM To: Cantrell, Elizabeth Subject: John White -4324 Westphalia Mattituck (new dock construction) Hi Elizabeth- Hope all is well with you. Just wanted to advise that construction was completed on my dock this past Friday afternoon. I am still out of town(on a LONG business trip),and won't return until December 9. If Mr. King wants to check out the construction before I return, can you ask him to call me(cell 516-650-4607)? I can make arrangements for a friend of mine to be there when he arrives. If the inspection can wait until my return, though, please let me know. Mr. King came to look at the just-started construction on Saturday,November 16(he met my friend at the house; 1 had just gone out of town a few days before). He had some questions at that time re: the placement of the stake in the ground where the 6 foot wooden ramp(on land)was to begin. The original stake denoting this location, which was placed by Nate Corwin in the spring of 2012(and this location was never changed/moved,even with the modifications made to the original survey/plans),had long since washed away, so 1 had the architect who drew the revised drawing(Mark Schwartz)come over before I left on my trip. Using the survey(and measuring from three points-the landward end of the old dock, the bulkhead corner on the east side and the bulkhead comer on the west side [the distances are all on the survey]), Mr. Schwartz placed the stake in the ground that Mr. King saw when he came to my house. If you would like it for your records, too,I just happened to come across a photo I took in October of 2012,which shows where the original stake was located, which 1 am attaching to this email. 1 took this the day after Sandy to send to my neighbor, whose boat broke away from his dock and landed on my property(1 tied the boat off to a tree during the storm). The stake is in the center of the photo, with a pinkish colored piece of cloth on top. Please let me know if you have any questions; Mr. King can feel free to call me any time. Hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving. John White Sent from my iPad 1 0 James F. The drafter of the plans which were submitted for the Trustees' review mistakenly noted that the pilings were to be of 4" diameter. The new builder I retained after receiving the permit advised me that these would not be structurally sound. The pilings I have on the existing dock are 8" in diameter, the size my builder is recommending for the new dock. Photo # 1, attached, shows one of my existing pilings, with an 8" diameter. Enclosed are 2 copies of a set of revised plans. These plans incorporate the reduced 90 foot catwalk length the Trustees' approved, and, additionally, have made the change from 4" to 8" pilings. My builder is also looking to add 2 smaller pilings, and abut them against the 2 farthest pilings (the ones attaching the floating dock). I believe he used the terms "dolphining" and/or "battening" in describing these added pilings. The purpose, he advised me, is to help withstand ice damage. I believe every dock on my end of Mattituck Creek has "dolphining/battening" incorporated into the pilings holding the floating docks - photographs "2", "3" and "4" are of my immediate neighbors' docks, and depict these structures. Photo number"2" depicts the dock of my neighbor to the west of me (Jean Saunders), and was built approximately 10 years ago by my dock builder, Angelo Stepnoski. It is a solid structure, and has held up well over the years. Mr. Stepnoski has advised me that, without "dolphining" or"battening", I will likely encounter the pilings lifting due to ice buildup in the winter. I would respectfully request, therefore, that my permit be amended to (1) change the piling size from 4" to the 8" size which currently exists, and (2) allow the 2 extra pilings described above to be added to the pilings holding the new floating dock. I appreciate the Trustees' consideration.
