He sta~ed that in the last 30 years the- towns haVe spent
$115~O00~00O on maintenance of town roads and in the last ten
years they have Spent $70~000~000 on the maintenance of town roa~s.
Last' year alone they spent $!1~000~000 on highway mainter~nce.. Of
this~ snow remov~ was the largest part of the.expense.
Fir. Dennison ~stimated 2~ of the town and county roads
should be reg~aded and realigned at a minimum ~st of
per mile~ He estimated that there are 400 ml~es ~f new t~wn
roads needed im~ediately~ at an estimated cost of $58~ 000~ per
mile for a goo~ type of road.. They have plans m~w ~or 150 miles
of new county ruads. He estimated that we will ~eed at least
20'0 miles ~f margina~ roads for the Expressway and Sunrise High--
way. ~e iS aSking f~r an increase in road funds from the State
and addit/~n~] State aid. They estimate to spend-

~.oord/~ation and consolidation and standardizing highway
specifications for development streets~ etc. He also sta~ed
--3-
that it is his experience that an .equipment pool would not be
feasible every highway department would be doing
the same of work at ~_he same time of the year. However
to in.tercha~ge equipme~t~ ,aa much as practi.~at at the present
t/me. He also stated-that central testJItg of material has not
prove~ t~ be practical- as most t~wns do not yet have standardized
and technical ~pecifications for materials to be used. He also
stated the pre~ent highway law hampers developments. It is npt
clear Ln many instances.
~ere was a disnussion by the supervise, rs of the tewn road
costs. Most towns have built some roads as well as development
roads. They ~i1 agreed that they should have better specifications
for town highways, tslip~Town has the most rigid specifications
and estimates the cost of 1000 per building lot to put An the
town r~quirement improvements including reads. ~rainage~ ere..
Mr. Dennisen stated that the ~ounty Planning Board should
be close to ~ Town Planning Board and attend all its meetings
as a lack of Coopera-tion and coordination on ~rainage has caused
big problems ~n the western t~wns. He sagg~sted parks as buffer
zones between residential an~ industrial ~istricts. The ~asic
need for the 'Countyoverai1 is a goo~ water s~pply and a~equate
sewage ~isposal.
In , it was agreed that highway superin-
a four year term rather 'than 'the- present
two year term in order that-they might more efficiently carry
out programs ~initia~ed during their a~ministration~

s~ch rigid requirements would tend to hinder the ~eveloper rather
than help the development of SuffoLk County.
There was a~ain a ~eneral dis~ussionof the maps displayed
on the~mlls of the room where everyone had a Chance to see
proposals of the County Planning Commission for each of the
ten towns. Representatives of the ten towns were requested to
take their sectional map home and discuss it and advis~ the
County Planning Commission if they approved or disapproved
the proposal for highways. ~ir. Dennison r,equested to meetwith
each of the individual Plannin9 Boards at the earliest possible
date to dt~uss with them and coordinate an .overall plan.
The meeting adjourned at 4-.15 P.M.
