Economic Development Committee Meeting Minutes
July 12, 2012
Present: John Stype, Amy Maguire Burns, lan Wile, Carolyn Fahey and Phillip Beltz.
Excused/Absent: Rona Smith, Steve Latham, Donielle Cardinale, Anthony Cocheo, Linton
Duell, Councilman Bill Ruland and Supervisor Scott Russell. Meeting began at 3:05 p.m.
Suffolk County Industrial Commercial Incentive Plan: The Town Board adopted the plan at
July 03, 2012 Town Board meeting.
Business Liaison Report: John Stype has slightly amended the proposed "Contact Sheet" for
meeting with businesses. The "How To Guide" will primarily provide links to other resources as
there is no need to copy all the information that is provided elsewhere. Guide will be ready in
the fall for distribution (electronically and hard copy.)
Consolidated Fundinq Application and Stony Brook Small Business Development Center
Meetin,cls: John attended meetings with Southold Town staff that provided resources.
Listeninq Tour:
· Meeting notes provided for meetings with Southold Business Alliance and marinas.
· Agreement to target the real estate industry, Phillip will contact Joan Bischoff to set up a
meeting in August.
· Meetings with the local business community will be held in August at local libraries; lan
will schedule Greenport, Amy will schedule Southold, Carolyn will schedule Cutchogue
and John will schedule Mattituck. Will need at least two EDC members to attend. Phillip
will email dates and times to EDC members to volunteer, he also will write an ad for the
Suffolk Times, notice on website and place advertisement on Channel 22.
Survey Results: lan reported that he has received 40 surveys, that the ad and recent meetings
have enhanced the results. He discussed some of the trends and comments and will send to
the entire committee for their review and will provide another report at next month's meeting.
Chambers of Commerce have the link on the websites.
Follow-up to Meetinqs: As follow-up to meetings with business community, it would be
beneficial for EDC to send email thanking for the opportunity to meet with members, remind
them to take the survey (include link) and inform them that EDC will review all comments and
concerns and will make recommendations to the Town Board.
Identifyin,q Themes, Concerns and Makin,q Recommendations to Town Board:
Agreement that all EDC review information expressed at meetings (SBA, marinas, surveys, etc.)
and identify five themes/issues and come up with a positive recommendation to make to the
Town Board to address the issue. This will be discussed at the August meeting with the
possibility of meeting with the Town Board in September to discuss. It was also suggested that
surveys or some similar instrument be provided to department staff (or department heads) to
ascertain what impediments/problems/issues they find (e.g. "incomplete applications" etc.) lan
will work on this with help from others.
Workshops and Seminars: Carolyn is planning a series of seminars for the EDC to offer in the
fall, some of the requests are provided in surveys (e.g. Marketing and Advertising, Social Media,
Financing and Business Plans.) She also suggested offering "case studies" at a later date.
The meetinq ended at 4:35 p.m. Next Meetinq Date/Time: EDC will meet Thursday,
Au.qust '16th at 3 p.m. at the Town Hall Meetinq room (note, not at the Annex.)
