August 6, 1957
Alterations ~ A non-confermihg ~ilding ma~y' not ~e .reconstrUcted or'
structurally altered durin~ its lifo to an extent exceeding in aggregate
cost 50% of the a~sessed Value of the Buildi~ unless said ~ildin~ is

of more tb~u 75% of its. assessed value ~m~ll be reoaired or rebuilt
exceDt ~in conformity %~th the provisio~s of this Ordinance without
special exception grouted by the Board of kopeals.
~fe s~e definitely of the opinion the> some provision should be made for the
location of ~usiness signs, Other ~han_ in the Business Districts~ which are
very few ~ nu~er and area. ~ne Pla~uning Board might designate mppropriate
areas for the location of s~tditional t~lsiness signs. The ~siness People
of the Town are greatly interested in advertising in order to properly
conduct their activities. For example; it would not be readily possiBle to
locate ~3.siness signs ~etween Greenport and Orien~ Point.
The Building Inspector au& one o..f the~emoers' of the Bo.amd of Appeals have
completed a tour of the major highws~s of the Town end noted the widespresd
erection.of b~siness sig~s in areas where they are not permitted under the
Ordinance. T~z~nty seven specific instaa~ces were noted. It is our thinking
that all signs, with the exception of signs advertising agricultural products,
require permits and that these perm_its be issued through the Building
specter with ~ metal identification tag, serially numbered, to '~e ~oplied to
the sign %y the Building Inspector. ?~e believe ~that the fee for this permit
shouz~ %e $~.00 on a sign 3; x 4; (12 square feet or smaller) end a fee of
$5.00 /~e required for signs of l~rger dimensions.
A~TIOLE IV- ~B~ BUSIi~_~'~S .DISTR!OT:
