NEW SUFFOLK HAMLET STAKEHOLDERS MEETING WITH THE TOWN
BOARD, April 04, 2005, 6:30pm
Stakeholders Present: Laura Avent, Phil Loria, Joan Robbins, Jerry Schultheis, Michael
Simon and Tom Samuels.
Kev Stakeholder Recommendations:
· New Suffolk is already built out and its housing is already dense and far exceeds
Health Dept. regulations.
· Support the creation of housing through accessory apartments in principal
dwellings and separate structures if on 1/4 or 1/2 acre and served by public water.
Do not necessarily think that units must be owner-occupied as second
homeowners may wish to rent units.
· Tom Samuels' documents should be included in the final written document
(Vision statement for commercial bayfront dated 4/2/93 and The New Suffolk
Approach: Enhanced Density dated 12/7/04).
· Waterfront viewscape and access is critical to hamlet residents. The 3.25 acre
waterfront parcel remains underutilized and its development needs to be
productive as well as economically conducive to its owner. Stakeholders support
a public/private venture with the utilization of revitalization grants (similar to
Mitchell Park in Greenport) with an emphasis on marine uses.
· The School House and ball field are essential to the hamlet's identity and should
not be altered.
· Stakeholders would like to designate the entire HALO zone as historic but
acknowledged that their fellow hamlet residents might not endorse this
suggestion.
· Flooding at Post Office must be addressed.
· Need waste receptacles at Town beaches year-round. Also need to address the
manner in which Legends disposes of its waste (cooking oil, etc.)
· Install stop signs at First/Main and Orchard/King streets.
Next Steps':
· Supervisor informed stakeholders that the Transportation Committee and
Planning Board would review recommendations and provide feedback to Town
Board and appropriate Town agencies.
The meeting adjourned at 7:25 pm.
