HomeMy WebLinkAbout01/14/2008Minutes of the Hamlet of Greenport Stakeholders meeting January 14, 2008 5:30 p.m. Peconic Landing, Greenport, N.Y. Attendee Stakeholders: Don Leslie, Jr., Chairman Victor Brown Melanie Norden, Co-Secretary Ural Talgat Diane Gilmore Absent: Mariel Dobler, Co-Secretary Jill Dunbar Tanya Padmore Nelia Purnhagen Sylvia Holtzberg Don Leslie chaired the meeting. Stakeholders approved the minutes of the 1/3 meeting and the notes from the public meeting. All agreed that the public meeting was a fruitful one, with a good turn-out and good public feedback and suggestions. Another public meeting will be held sometime in May or June 2008 at the Greenport 3rd Street firehouse. Stakeholders briefly discussed the annexation issue which has received recent press coverage following meeting David Nyce's presentation at Peconic Landing. Stakeholders agreed that annexation is an issue that would likely not "fly" and would be economically deleterious for residents in the unincorporated Hamlet to be annexed to the Village. Annexation would likely result in a significant jump in property taxes, particularly because of the repairs needed to the sewage treatment plant, electric power plant, etc. Mayor Nyce has also floated the idea of a separate police force, which might be prohibitively expensive. Stakeholders next discussed topics to be discussed with the Planning Board on 2/25, including: · Status of hamlet signage · Need for scenic by-law legislation · Need for "clean up" legislation/enforcement in areas around the Hamlet, particularly parcels on Rt. 25 just west of the Village, including the "antique" store · A clean up after your dog sign at the information booth and Town clean-up of the park at that site · Status of the light at Sound Road and 48 · Enforce legislation to get rid of the cars at the Empire gas station on 25 · The "history" of the car rental business near the Hampton Jitneys bus stop in Greenport · The importance of a "gateway" project and the determination of which group should make recommendations re the Port of Egypt area · Legislation that would require new construction/renovation of buildings on the water to be built to maintain scenic vistas · Annexation The next meeting will be held on January 28th. Respectfully submitted, Melanie Norden, Co-Secretary
