It really Is a very enjoyable way to spend a summer evening is to go down and watch the different teams on the league. What they did last year, in additlon to the adult league, is to start a Junior league, and this is truly one of the nicest recreation events that we ~have. It Is a family affair, and everyone just has a good time. So, the gentleman that owned the beach was golng to stock boats and so forth, so it was no longer available to us, so we sat down with the Mattltuck Park District, and they have been agreeable to work in partnership with us, and we are going to put in four courts up at their park in Mattltuck, up at the Inlet. Part of the parking area will be used, because they have more than they will ever need as far' as parking, so thls Is, again, another case of partnershlp between a municipality, and another group withln the community to provide nice services to, not only our youth, but our older population. The next one is money that we have asked for to spend up at Laurel Lake. This is another park that has been there, I believe, ten, twelve years ago. We developed it, and it has had little updating, or cleaning, or maintenance in many years. There ls a fence that has been broken for three years, and it is my feeling that If the Town has properties we certainly should matntaln them, and take care of them. They belong to all of you. The field up there Is in a condition that is dangerous to the young people playing, and we' have over six hundred kids alone in the Mattituck area playing Little League, so we have a tremendous amount of young people using all of our park faculties, be it the Panther football team, or the Little Leaguers, se we will go back up here, and first give money for the volley court construction, and then we are going to flx the park. 30.-Vote of the Town Board: Ayes: Councilman Murphy, Councilman Romanelli, Justice Evans, Councilwoman Hussle, Supervisor Cochran. Cochran to execute a Quite Claim Deed to Oyster Ponds Historical Society transferring to them the Brown Hills Cemetery located at Main Road, Orient, New York, all in accordance wlth the approval of the Town Attorney. SUPERVISOR COCHRAN: A word of' explanation on this, also. According to New York State Law when a cemetery is abandoned the munlcipallty becomes responsible for It, so we thought perhaps a better way to work this out was to Involve the Oyster Ponds Hlstorlcal Society, and they were very agreeable. The land Itself, and why it is kind of gone now, is that it used to belong to the Commoners, and they haVe dispersed. I think It goes back to a,0~s, when they gave the property to the State Park. The cemetery was really the last piece of land that they owned, and they Just no longer exist, or we are not aware of who they are. So, we are able to execute a Quit Claim Deed to the Oyster Ponds Historical Society. They will be doing everyday maintenance, and keeping It cleaned up, and so forth, and there pg 13 - 2/19/98 are quite a few trees in the vale, where this cemetery exists, and If they need some extra help, as far as big tree limbs, and stuff, the Highway Department will help them on that. I think it is Important that we'as a community maintain and take care of our cemeteries, if there Isn't anything in place to do so. 32 .-Vote of the Town Board: Ayes: Councilman Murphy, Councilman Romanelli, Justice Evans, Councilwoman Hussle, Supervisor Cochran. N .~0 uND og .Bay ~u, thold G N £ LITTLE PECO2VIC ,~ BAY September 8, 2010 Ellen Cone Busch, Executive Director Oysterponds Historical Society PO Box 70, Village Lane Orient, NY 11957 RE: Protection of Brown's Hill Cemetery Dear Ms. Busch, As you may already know, the Town of Southold is currently in the process of creating a new comprehensive plan, Southold 2020. The plan includes a chapter that addresses the historic and cultural community character of the town, including historic structures and districts, cemeteries, the Benjamin Franklin milemarkers, as well as historic and significant trees. The research on the historic and significant trees began in the early 1990s when the Town of Southold Tree Committee sought to compile a listing of the biggest trees in the town by soliciting recommendations from the public. Ten years after their publication of the 2000 Trees of Southold listing, we revisited their work to see which trees still existed, how much they have grown, and map the trees with a Global Positioning System (GPS) device. Four of the trees revisited were located in the Brown's Hill Cemetery and were found in varying degrees of poor health, with rotting trunks and falling limbs. It appears that a large limb has fallen recently but fortunately managed to avoid disturbing any stones. To prevent further damage, we are recommending the removal of the trees that pose the most serious threats to the cemetery. While we value these large and historic trees, the significance of this cemetery is certainly more important to Southold's history. I have enclosed pictures from our field visit and would welcome your input with what should be done. Please contact me with any questions you may have.
